Can anyone point me in the right direction for doing up my Nissan 300zx TT. It is stock at the moment but I had in mind the following:

Monster Intercooler - $2500 (apparently bolt on)
Turbosmart Electronic Boost Controller - $750
    ECU - $1700

How much boost will this allow me to run safely (I would prefer a conservative approach)? What kind of power increase can I expect? I would like to install as much of it myself as I can would installing these things be hard?

As you can see I am working on about $5000, so if anyone knows how I could better spend this money taking into consideration horse power and also preserving the engine.

    All replies appreciated.

those are pretty good mods, but im sure you can cut the price down by far.. perhaps 1500 for a cooler.. and a 2nd hand ebc for around 250..
depending if you go the full monty and get a fully tunable ecu your up for atleast 1500..
or you could contact dr drift and get a tunable chip + 2 hours of dyno tuning for 600 drive in drive out..
then a full exhaust including dumps, front pipes and cats, around 1500
i run 14 psi with a pod/catbak/stock ic's and its fine, so with those id do around 14-16
    hope this helps

How long have you owned the TT Scott?

If you just acquired it. It might be better to see if the engine and drive train is in good shape before you start pushing all those extra horses through.
Not much point in spending $5000 on extra power if you blow the engine doing it:(

    Re:

Well there this I guy I met (a friend or my girlfriends) has a R32 Skyline GTR pretty much stock, but he was telling her how cool his car is and how 300zxs aren't great. So i told her that he just cost me $5k because now I am gonna go nuts and bolt on some serious horsepower and kick his ass. She understands the male condition and accepted as part of the whole package. I want to know is putting that stuff on a stock TT will make is safe and powerful enough to kick that guys ass and how many horses/kilowatts I would be looking at.

I was looking at getting the ECU, intercooler, etc. from www.300zx.com.au if anyone knows where I could get the same gear cheaper it would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    First things first

Before you do what you've intended on doing so far, check your car is in good order. Also, the first mods should really be air pod and exhaust before monster intercoolers :)

In the end, all the power and the car could be irrelevant, if your motive is to kick the guys arse, then make sure you get a very good set of tyres, and drop the pressure in them a little bit. I would expect the skyline to be quicker off the line.

    Benny_C About as subtle as...

I'd say you can get parts a lot cheaper than that...

    particularly I/C's.

Don't forget that a good exhaust is VERY important also.

I have done similar upgrades (except for the ECU) and I'm running ~300rwHP @ 16psi. (see my profile for list)

Shifter has some impressive figures to look at.

    Cheers, Ben.

Put the money aside for an engine rebuild, if it hasnt been done already.

You can safely run a stock z on 12psi. Filter and exhaust are the first mods to get. You dont need a monster cooler as yet and an ecu would probably set you back $2K including the tuning.

    Cheers.

Re: Put the money aside for an engine rebuild, if it hasnt been done already.

I guess the TT needs to breathe. Hi flow intake, good flowing exhaust are a must.

Follow that with the ECU or piggyback unit + a boost controller/jets and welcome to stage 3.

Front mount intercoolers after that if you have the cash.

I believe you can safely run 14-16 PSI if your motor and turbos are in good condition.

As someone else has just said, the Zed is heavier than a Skyline, and you won't generate too many horses until around 3000rpm, so your skyline buddy will wooop you at the start.

Seems a lot of money to kick someone's ass. There is a lot more pleasure to be had from the style of the car, as well as the performance.

    Just my thoughts :)

    heres what i would do

other have said get your car checked, your probably thinking my cars fine. If your not capable to do it your self spend a few hundred getting stuff like compression checked, change coolant rod radiator powerflush, all preventative stuff that are often overlooked. If you engine is very tired do not boost it up and get ready for a rebuild. If the engine is reasonable.

1.fit pod filter (unifilter seem to be good value) $200
    2.fit under drive pulley $350
    3.fit boost jets to 12psi $2
    4.fit an exhaust system $2000

Can probably get cheaper these are just est., thats $2500 and will get you easy 200rwkw+ imho enough to take on a stock gtr. 0-100km/h 5ish secs quatermile well in the 13s. I know gtr have some fantastic figures but that is ideal condition, new car, perfect driver.

If you still want more mods
    5.hitec ecu (www.ttzed.com)less then $1000
    6.14-16psi boost
    7.fmic $1300 (on special www.ttzed.com)
could throw you anywhere between 230-260rwkw, at this stage stockish gtr has no hope and but you might have trouble controlling the car too , so he might end up winning.

Absolute best value for money mod for a TT is.....

...removing the restrictors in the stock exhaust! :)

    Is this easy to do?

Do the cats just unbolt - ie can you open the cat up just by unbolting two halves, or is it a cut and weld job? Been meaning to try this before i spend big bucks on an aftermarket exhaust. Can it be done whilst still on the car, or best to remove the cats.

    cheers

Re: Is this easy to do?

I think the cats are a one piece unit. If you want them gutted, you probably should remove the pipes from the car. The contents of the cats are harmful if inhaled.

I have been told you should wet them to stop any dust from rising before you knock out the contents. This would be easier off the car.

    Just my opinion.

I will be corrected if I am wrong.

    Egg ....

    Past the cats.

Restrictors are after the cats, unbolt the exhaust just behind the cats and they're maybe 150mm further back inside the pipe.
Easy job if you have the right tools, A Dremel is probably not up to the task.

I would not suggest gutting the cats........

    1) for environmental reasons (they do serve a purpose)

    2) to avoid the fines (I think it is $5000)

    Egg ....

    I wasn't.....

....suggesting doing anything to the cats. *hugs a tree*
The restrictors in the stock exhaust have nothing to do with the cats!

well i dunno about the best mods but i would sugest you see what you can do legally to your car in your state.
i know in vic you cannot have an aftermarket cooler as well as a pod filter.
i would recomend having a look at the laws because yellow stickers don't go with 300zx's

Sorry, i love the environment too :)

I had never heard of restrictors - thought that the cats were the biggest cause of restriction. I will look into removing the restrictors. When you say that a dremel is not the best tool, what would you recommend instead?

    cheers

The restrictors were there to limit HP for the Japanese market......

in conjunction with the restrictive air filter they effectively strangled a tt in order to comply with the 208kw limit. Which made "free" hp available to anyone who wanted it by throwing on a pod filter & a decent exhaust.

As for removing the restrictor plate, I would suggest one of those grinding stones you put in your electric drill (something about 1-1.5" diameter should do the job)
