Hey guys, relatively new zed owner here. The time has come to give her a service and i'm needing some insight into what engine oil i should use? i'm pretty sure the previous owner stuck with a semi-synthetic Penrite 10-40w. and I've been getting mixed messages on what would be best for the car, some people are suggesting going a full synthetic Royal Purple oil, while others are saying stick with a semi synth Penrite or Nulon Can anyone give me some advice on this? The penrite semi-synth 10w-40 is popular and reliable. There isn't much benefit to the super fancy proper full synthetics unless you're running the oil at high temperatures like track work.
You can buy a lot of other good things with the money though. Nothing wrong with the ester based oils if you've got the cash but I wouldn't stretch the budget for it. Full zinc is probably something I'd buy into for the Z though given the old lifter design, not that I've heard of failures.
Oils for goyls. I use 10-50 full synthetic in my turbo. A NA would be OK on 10-40 semi-synthetic in my opinion.:zlove:
Thanks guys for all the replies i think i might stick with what i know for this service and ill do some more research for the next one, I also should have added that my zed is my weekender/cruise car, its a 91 TT, and is getting into the 250k kilometer mark, most places books/computers (Repco, Supercheap, Sprint), were recommending a 20-50w or 20-60w oil, and that seems too thick for me. But with the age of the car is that what i should be going for?

Anything from 40 to 60 hot will work fine in a stock TT, with a big oil cooler I'd drop down from 60 though. Same for running a cooler thermostat, although I wouldn't recommend either of those mods for a cruiser.
The viscosity of the oil to use is easy peasy. Look in the Nissan Factory Service Manual in the Maintenance Section. The viscosity to use is dependant on the expected ambient temperature the vehicle will be operating. The recommended oil for warm & cold areas where the temperature is above -20 degrees Celcius is 10W-30. If the temperature in your area is between -20 deg C & gets above 40 deg C, use 10W-30, 10W-40 or 10W-50. Or you can use 15W-40 or 15W-50. If the temperature ranges from -10 deg C to above 40 deg C, use 20W-20, 20W-40 or 20W-50. For hot areas 20W-40 & 20W-50 are suitable. There's no point in going to a 20W-60 weight oil.

60 weight is not 'better' it's just thicker, you want your oil within the correct bracket, not the thickest or thinnest available. As for ester based synthetics, they are 'better' at maintaining their specified viscosity at extreme temperatures. Good for race cars and extended service periods, given the amount of blowby that the vg seems to develop I would not recommend long oil change intervals. It's like putting 98ron in a hyundai, you don't need the benefits it provides.

I'm so glad people have gotten over the 5W and 0W debate... Anyway, factory service manual, read it and buy the best in your budget, unless you've had a forged rebuild, then go with your builders recommendation to suit the tolerances he or she has set. I put 5W in my Kombi once back in the day when I was naive...had a lot of oil to clean up from the floor after it blew through all the seals.
Haha, it's far from dead, just not as popular here where a record cold snap rates as "chilly" or "brisk" on the international scale.

nah, there was a whole debate on using 0W and 5W oils on here. There was a camp who swore that putting the low weight oils in a worn VG was an "enhancement". Had nothing to do with climate...just that Mobil 1 had a race car on the bottle...
