I know it's been up before, but during my "SEARCHING" I couldn't find a confirmed solid answer. so here goes...

What is the largest LEGAL rim diameter??
    18", 19", 20"???

I don't mean for insurance purposes or whatever, but i'm talking about if the fuzz pulls you over and gets picky.

    Cheers,
    Ben.

** let the flaming begin  **

    Ah Benny my Jenga Partner!!!!!

    Take your flame suit off bud. When I was in town the other day shopping for wheels, I thought the law was you could not go larger than 2" from factory. Well the guys at Bob Jane pulled out the little booklet you get from Dept of Transport about legal mods and there in black and white it states;

"New Wheel (with tyre) Diameter can not exceed +15mm or -35mm of OEM Wheels"

So basically a 19" rim with a 35 series tyre is scrapping the boundaries at 15.3mm larger than OEM.

    Different in each state???

I made similar enquiries with the RACV here in Vic...& they confirmed it must be the overall diam of the rim PLUS tyre that falls into the acceptable tolerances when compared to that of the original factory fitted rim & tyre....sorry I don't have the exact figure tho???...but it was similar to the Qld figure from memory??
I think other states such as SA may have the '2" larger than the standard rim ' restriction??...so 18" would be the legal max there??

Ahhh, just the sort of answer i needed bro...

So to answer a very simple question with a very simple answer ..... would a set of 20" rims be illegal if Mr. Plod pulls you over with an attitude???

    btw, NGENGAAAAA!!!!!

    Going by the 2" rule...

didnt the anniversary model have 17's so you could argue again that 19" rims are legit for z32's.

Im pretty sure though that at the end of the day unless you permit every change you make to you car a cop can sticker you for it.

Ive been told that they can do it for an aftermarket stereo because its not OEM...so go figure.

NENGAAAA!!! If Mr Plod has an attitude, you'll more than likely be fined.

Another problem you may face though Ben, is that the 20" rims will leave you with an extremely tight turning circle IMO.

It will make your cruising experience a bit of a PITA. It's more than likely that the front guards will rub especially on the roads we usually take on the Z cruises.

 Would look bloody hot, but would it be worth having to repair guard damage from a bump in the road???

    Good Luck with the project:p

mr plod will do you for it regardless if he wants to, and let the inspection center sort it out.. the only way to get away without stock is by holding permits for whatever you have changed

    ive seen that done

i know a guy who bought a brand new hilux but wanted 20 inch wheels legaly when he got it so the car yard just stuck the tyre size label off a landcruiser on it

The issue here is what the RTA or Vicroads mean by "wheel".

The 2 inch rule IMO is the outside diameter of the entire wheel and tyre component.

IE: if The overall diameter of the tyre is within 2 inches of what it is stock . Then it should be accetable.

Therefore if you got 19's and could get tyres with a profile to keep the rolling diameter the same you could put them on.

This is the only explaination that makes sense.

    Rim diameter is irrelevant IMHO.

Referances to the "wheel" is for the entire unit. Not the rim.

    17" tyre placard

Mine was fitted with a tyre placard that lists 17" as a legal ftiment by the complance company. I guess thats because they had 17" rims fitted when they complied it. 19" rims are legal for me in that case :p

    My understanding...

This may be SA specific but my understanding is that the overall rolling diameter of the wheel/tyre can't exceed the tyre placard by more than 1" and the actual rim diameter can't exceed the tyre placard by more than 2".

In Melb they usually don't care as long as nothing rubs but from memory

its +/-15mm in diameter and 1" bigger, some people say 2" bigger. As long as nothing rubs, the cops are usually ok with it.

    re::

from gathered information i have come up with the answer to this question... there is no limit to rim size just as long as the overall tyre and tread size isnt bigger than the standard tyre and tread size!!! i.e the whole perimeter size has to be the same as stock...
like i have twenties on mine but the over size isnt bigger than the stock... so big rims(20's) small treaad width...
