For anyone that feels a bit naked without a radar detector, then here is your chance.

I had one before, sold it, and now I regret it.

Warning, guys in the Eastern States - radar detectors are illegal over there.

However, this is a stealth unit and according to the reports, this can't be detected.

    See here for details
    Link 1

    Link 2

And this australian site (it's called XR in oz)
    Link 3

If someone else can get them cheaper than $750 then let me know, but I'm expecting that's pretty good. I arranged with a guy at a shop, told him to take 10% margin on it and we'll take 10 to 20 of them.

So that's the deal boys and girls.

    EOI in here.

If somebody knows what the retail is on these then please post it

I rang a car shop (motoquip) and asked them but that store hadn't even heard of this model yet

    Where can i get one???

Well this is a Group Buy thread

if you want one then you just put up your hand

alternatively you can buy one in WA or overseas over the internet

OK i just rang a place for a retail price

and they said "they normally go for about $1100 but he can do it for me for $950"

so I don't know if this $750 is the best deal around, if someone else can get a lower price then by all means let's look into it!

So, say for example 'someone' in the eastern states got one off you...

would it work against the handheld radar gun, the new 'in car' speed radar, the 'poilice van mounted' speed cameras on the side of the road, and any other types???

ALSO, how long does it detect the speed radar before their radar registers a speed off you??? does it tell you??
(sorry for dumb questions, i'm new to all this)

  10. maTTz

    maTTz 500 Club

    those aren't dumb questions,

i'm aware that people in the eastern states may not have ever seen one of these in action - they are illegal and there is a reason for that -> by using one of these you can avoid getting caught by speed radars

a handheld radar gun is actually a laser gun - this unit will tell you if you are getting done as soon as the laser shines on you, but unfortunately the operator can determine your speed within about 0.5 of a second so you don't have much time to brake and slow down

the "in-car" speed radars mounted in police cars use radar and you can detect them from very far away with this unit - you are aware of them long before you can even see them - the detector just goes nuts beeping and flashing and you respond accordingly

police van mounted speed cameras on the side of the road use radar, but not as strong as the ones in the cars - you can detect these just in time to slow down - if you were going at some insane speed (40km+) then you may not get back down to the limit but you would get down to a respectable speed (10km typical) so that your fine wasn't too severe (quite possibly you will still get it down to the limit - it depends on how quickly you react to the beeps etc)

it detects all radar and laser

for those in the eastern states that are unaware, these are common in WA - because its so dam good

i think fines are more expensive in the eastern states also, so payback period is even shorter

surely it pisses u off when you get flashed for doing 7km over the limit in your well-maintained with good tyres and brakes machine
and some rust-bucket that shouldn't be on the road goes on past at the limit whilst the driver is putting on her lipstick in the mirror and not watching the road

the fine here is $50 for the first 9km over
    $100 after that

and if it's a double demerit weekend, then you can't really put a price on those points if you need to drive to work, see ur gf etc

    Some great answers, thanks Matt...

also, from the website you can see it comes with a bracket to stick on the windscreen with suction caps. but is this unit able to be hard-wired and perminently mounted in your car?? if so, are these "sensors" able to be positioned anywhere out of the road or hidden?

    - and regarding the price, from what you said about maybe finding a cheaper supplier. Is there any chance it could be sourced for under the $700 mark??
    That would be super!

    Thanks again,
    Ben.

well if we can get it cheaper we will - i'll keep trying

i'm not loyal to that retailer, so i will try to shop around

getting it much cheaper than $750 will be a bonus though, so don't hope too much... maybe someone will do it for $700

but i'm expecting that these retailers probably get it for about $650 and thats why they sell it for $1k - don't worry i'll continue to shop around - although some of these shops haven't heard of it yet because it's quite new on the scene

yes it uses suction caps to stick it to your windscreen, or some people mount it with velcro tape to their dash - either way you want to be able to quickly get it away from view if you hv to make a forced stop... however, the stealth characteristics of this unit should mean that it never happens (unless it's visible from a distance and it gets visually detected by eyesight)
it's not weather proof and it runs from your cigarette lighter 12VDC source...

if you permanently mount it then you'd have to do some customisation panel work so that it's well concealed, but remember that it has to have visibility so it should be pointing out ur windscreen

i woudln't permanently mount it if i was you - but i would think about putting it in a location on my dash that meant it wasn't too visible and could be swiftly re-located somewhere

in regards to the pricing, there is an online store in the US selling them for $450 USD each. This is $640AuD which when you add GST/shipping etc I don't think you're going to get a price under $750AUD

These units come from the USA so we have to pay all the middlemen on the way here, this is probably a good price

I just called up another shop and they would do 10+ at $800 each

The guy that gave me the $750 price likes me and andrew(minivan) because we just went in there and bought 4x12inch subs and 2amps so he sees us as repeat customers - this relationship may be giving us the best price possible

    A mounting idea..

I have seen a video of guys using detectors in the states and they had them concealed in the roof lining at the top of the window.. that way they were permanently mounted and also cleverly hidden out of unwanted eyes way, and in the z been so low the cop would nearly have to do a u turn with his head in ur car to see it.. just a thought..

also if they did happen to see it just say sumthin clever like.. its for the automatic headlights he he heeee

    Just a thought

Lets say Mr.Plod pulls you over, he is inspectiong your car, doesn't notice your illegal radar sensor to begin with. Except now because his car is parked within 10m of yours and his in-car constant radar is in his car, wouldn't the radar detector be going crazy beeping and lighting up drawing attention to itself? Also if mounted in the roof as sugested this might present issues when trying to read the device, unless it is positioned in such a way that it is visable to the driver?

yes, but you would push a button to turn it off if it is in a permanent location - you would have installed a switch in the 12VDC hardwiring

that wouldn't happen to me cos i'd hv it unplugged and vanished hence no more beeping

being able to see it is good because it's informative - reading the number of bars of signal strength that you're receiving etc
it also has an audio alert which tells you the frequency band (K,Ka, etc) and you can tell the strength by the speed of the beeps (like a geiger counter warning of danger) hehe

but i wouldn't mount it permanently because it's too much fabrication effort

I'm keen on one... Just need to save some cash after COONA

If we can get the price down to 750 inc freight I'd be a very happy man.

    carzone in the corner crying!

yeah maTTz i think im with fate...the cheaper the better + need to save the

dosh. Just a question what sort of km range does it detect with the in car radar in highway po po's??

  18. maTTz

    maTTz 500 Club

well as for the km range, thats a tough one,

that's really hard to say because how would I know? But here is what I know about it

1)One of my friends was driving in the countryside and got done by one of those cop in-car radars - and it was before he saw the headlights (it was at night on long straight roads) because he slowed down as soon as he saw them -> he got a big fine
half an hour later it happened again to him
so the range on those suckers is huge - my friend didn't have a RD. But you can see that the range on them is much different to the range of the roadside speed camera which is very short (not a powerful radar)
the relevance of this is, that the radar needs to be strong enough to bounce off your vehicle and back to the sender - but as soon as it's strong enough to reach your car you'll detect it - it has to be twice that strength to reach the sender again - in other words, if he can detect u 1km away (the radar has to bounce off you and then back to him) then you should be able to detect him (approximately) 2km away :p (these values are just for illustration)

2)when i've been driving down the freeway before my RD would go nuts and over time you learn what that means, so I'm on the lookout for the po car or the unmarked po car and eventually (a bit of time spent looking around) it goes flying past on the other side of the freeway (in the opposite direction) - given that we're driving towards each other at 100km/hr each over a noticeable period of time then it's quite a distance

    3) i've been on a major road before and the RD was going nuts, this time they were coming up from behind and i was at a traffic lights, so maybe they were slowing down, but it took a good 10-15 seconds before i saw them

    4) lots of other events similar to the above

so you see I don't have any "km" data on that reading, except that its a big distance and plenty enough of warning - also the RD goes full bar in signal strength instead of false alarms which usually only go to about 2 bar (things such as ATM's or automatic sliding doors will give u 2 bars while you drive past them)

We'll start to finalise things once we get 10 numbers - i may get some from outside these forums also (friends etc)

If anyone wants to join in they can post it in here or message me via PM or send me an email (see my profile)

And when this gb is finished, i think we'll remove this thread

    cheers~

    Another thing to consider,

is that when(if) RD's become illegal in every state of Aust, then it'll be good luck getting them into the country from overseas (and getting them from a reputable source in oz may be difficult)

because as it goes through customs I imagine there'd be issues

there is a politician in WA campaigning to stop them here

So on the chance that these become difficult to get later, you should consider it as more risky to wait till later to purchase it

Looking for at least 10 - Current Status:

    1) maTTz (definately 2 units, maybe 5)
    2) fate
    3) carzone
