    Hey all

Noticed last night as I was dumping stuff into my passenger side - that the whole length of the Z has been keyed. Starting just above the passenger headlight, alllllll the way to the brake light.

As you would imagine, slightly pissed off.

However the scratch isnt deep... I think it is just into the clear coat. The only reason I noticed it was the fact that the rain was catching in it. Lucky I seem to have gotten someone whos as much an incompetent as they are a prick with no regard for other peoples belongings.

Should be able to buff it out.... So the question is: Any tips? Products, techniques, etc.

Guess I know what I'm doing saturday morning now eh?

    Andy

if it is not deep, try meguirxx (cant spell) swirl remover (very fine cut product), hand buff it. then polish, then wax.

i have tried it and it did work.

if still no luck, then yes go to ask professional painter/detailer

If you've never buffed before get it done by a pro, you can end up doing more harm than good.

Find another car to practice on!

Bummer about being keyed though, had my hatch keyed once and had to get the whole panel resprayed. Hate to think what kind of $$ it would take to get a whole side done so I hope it does buff out.

Hows the rest of your paint dude?? If its going to cost you a bit to repair professionaly, might be worth your while to claim it on insurance, pay your exess, and get a respray??

yes, if you are not familiar with machine then dont use it. you will kill the paint.
    try it by hand first.

Cheers, i got some of the swirl remover - shall give that a razz.

The rest of the paint isnt too bad, but I do need to get some other body work fixed. Need a new front bar, roof needs respraying, and i need to finish off the Brazilian.

Unfortunately I only have 3rd party, fire and theft... So not sure where that leaves me in terms of claiming it on insurance. I know that my excess is $400, getting those panels resprayed would be... god... $1800ish.

And yes, before you say anything... Im changing it to full comp asap.

That sucks Andy, my sister had the same thing happen to her and took it to a place next door to K&D in hobart, cost about 150 and you can barely tell! I'm getting some body work done on my car and was quoted $700 to spray one side, if it comes to that you should find a decent price if you shop around. Again, sorry to hear.. would love to catch a prick doing that - very nasty consequences!!

Slightly pissed? you've got a better temper than I mate. I'd be very pissed off and having being the victim of vandalism twice in the past, it's only pure scum who do these things.

Get a mild cutter and go over the area. If it's deep and hasn't gone through the clear coat you should be ok. I managed to get most blemishes out of my paint except the areas it's gone through and to the undercoat. Once the scratch is gone or at the very least become very hard to notice, go over it with a polish.

change your insurance over to full comp asap, give it a go with the cut n buff stuff and then wait a few weeks, then claim it on insurance.

yes its illegal but alot of people do it and thers no way to prove it was done before the car was insured.

I would do no such thing!!

(see post above about changing to full comp)

    *looks innocent*

Marty - which place was it? Just detailing or a respray place?

Maybe try the brain matter of the a-hole who keyed your car.If it doesn't remove the scratch at least it would make you feel a little warm and fuzzy.

I have painted and polished cars for a while, this is what i do when i notice a scratch.

Get some 1200 grit wet & dry sand paper from Sprint auto parts or Autobarn. put the sand paper in water and lightly sand over the effected area. (AND I MEAN LIGHTLY) Then get some good cutting compound with an old clean towel and rub and polish over the freshly sanded area.

After this step the car should start looking quite nice.

Then get some warm soapy water and clean the area.

Car should look like brand new....

    Good luck
