OK my TT has folding mirrors but I've hit a slight snag:

They work fine but I often forget to fold them out again when I drive off (Especially if I pull out forwards and don't need to check them) and I sometimes forget to fold them in (I don't trust public car parks - my VN and my old Torana both lost mirrors in car parks).

I saw this mod Link for an S13 and as far as I am aware our mirrors work in the exact same way.

The one problem with that mod is that it disables the switch entirely, which is fine for most cases but on more than one occaision I've wanted to fold the mirrors in when driving through tight streets with cars parked either side, or squeezing between some idiot who won't move in a car park.

As the switch has a constant 12v power source when the car is on and it just earths the appropriate wire to control in/out I figured I could wire both sides of the switch to a second relay so that when the switch is in the middle doing nothing, it connects the circuit to work automatically, but if you flip the switch either way the mirrors fold back in.

Here is a basic diagram to explain it:

    Relay 1:

*When the ignition is OFF, Pin 5 is connected to Pin 1 and no triggered.
*When the ignition is OFF, Pin 6 is connected to Pin 2, grounding it and therefore acting as the rocker switch and triggering Mirrors In.
*When the ignition is ON, the relay switches, and reverses which wire is earthed, triggering Mirrors Out.

    Relay 2:

*When the car is OFF or the switch is centered, Pin 5 and Pin 1 are connected, providing ground to Pin 3 on Relay 1 as per the mod linked above.
*When the car is OFF or the switch is centered, Pin 6 and Pin 1 are connected, providing 12v constant to Pin 4 on Relay 1 as per the mod linked above.
*When the car is ON and the switch is moved to either pole, the relay connects Pin 5 to Pin 3 providing 12v to Pin 3 on Relay 1 (As per car OFF in mod linked above)
*When the car is ON and the switch is moved to either pole, the relay connects Pin 6 to Pin 4 providing ground to Pin 4 on Relay 1 (As per car OFF in mod linked above.

This way when the car is off, the switch does nothing at all and the mod works as per the linked one - Starting folds mirrors out, stopping folds mirrors in.

However the switch should reverse the earth and the 12v and put Relay 1 into the same state as car off, providing a Mirrors In override.

Will this work before I go frying something as I really know bugger all about this stuff. If not why not?

    Any suggestions are welcome.

If you succeed in getting them to work that way, let us know(but I'm more concerned about your need to "fold them in when driving in narrow streets").
Where in God's name do you find streets that narrow(do you notice a number of people walking on these streets, they may be footpaths)?

LOL in Geelong there are these "streets". Basically laneways that cars can drive down and people still park either side or try to pass you next to a parked car instead of waiting.

Plus I do want the override anyway just in case.

I'm interested in this mod also!

our only issue is I dont believe there is a timer or microswitch or anything in the mirrors to turn them off, stock the mototr on mine keeps trying to run in or out as long as the toggle switch is pushed, with your wiring the same will happen unless they (like a power antenna) have a system to power off at each extreme of travel, I have not checked the logic in your circuit either but at a glance looks plausible (except for my earlier point),

i did have this done on one of my old z's there is some sort of switching device inside the mirror to make it stop when it reaches the fully open position. If i remember correctly i used something like 3 relays but i didnt use the original switch to manually control it i had another switch which was an ON-OFF-ON automatic centring switch and it would open and close with the door unleck and lock. Ill have to have a think about it and see if I can remember how I did it.

Mine has no motor run when it reaches the end. If I push the switch down and leave it down, it runs until the end of the travel and then stops.

Edit: Just verified, it doesn't run on once it reaches the end. Maybe something is wrong with yours?

I wouldn't want to wire it up to the door locks because 1) If I want to lock the door while the car is on then they'd fold in and 2) The only other time I'd want them in the car would be locked.

I could probably add another relay to have a mirrors out override too so if I want them out and the car is off I can.

OK so I made an amended version that would allow a manual override for mirrors out should you want to fold the mirrors out while the car is off.

    Any thoughts? Flaws?

Sorry... to clarify, the mirrors were controlled by the alarm remote, not the actual door locks, so when the alarm remote sent the signal to lock the mirrors would fold in, that doesnt affect if you manually lock the doors.

my mind is not with it but for those that care there are a few free programs like this >> http://download.cnet.com/Logic-Circuit-Designer/3000-2054_4-10840569.html that arew great for nesting relays and designing logic circuits, the reality is that this can be done with basic flipflop's etc nesting relays can be a real headache and takes a lot of space in comparison,

for programs this is the one I found easiest to use http://www.softronix.com/logic.html the first link has a easy selfinstaller
