Out of the blue early last week, a friend and I became aware that a local Car Stereo business (Audiotech) was holding a Sound-Off competition culminating in a dB Drag Off on Sunday 29th November (yesterday)...

So we thought - "Why not! Should be a laugh, eh?", and we registered my Zed on Saturday morning, and spent the late afternoon tuning my Zed's Car Stereo set-up in preparation for the following days competition.

All was going well until about 5pm, when once we'd found our chosen song, my friend turned the Zed off and began to climb out of the drivers seat. As he did, I noticed an acrid smell coming from the boot. We popped the hatch and had ourselves a wee look at the sub box.

Some of you may remember, and many of you wouldn't have seen my sub box, but it has an 18mm thick perspex window in the top of it. A glance through the window showed us that the box was thick with smoke.

The right hand sub woofer had fried in a big way...

So we called it quits for the night, decided to try and find a new set of subs in the morning, ordered pizza, put on the movie 'The Game' and lamented our bad luck. :rolleyes2:

So we jumped up the next morning early, rocked up to Audiotech at 9am and attempted to pick up another pair subs. To my dismay, the Rockford Fosgates fouled the sub box, leaving the only 10" subs they had that would fit being a pair of cheap $100.00 Clarions.

We bought the Clarions, went out into the parking lot, popped the hatch and installed them in the carpark as all the other entrants started to turn up - finishing just in the nick of time for the 10am start of the days Sound-Off competition.

From there the day went well. Our Class was Street A (Street Novice), and our first run was an impressive 133.7dB, our second run was 133.1, and the third was 132.9 (with the subs clipping and the amps more than a little bit toasty).

All of our runs were ahead of the rest of the competitors in our class (and all but four other cars in higher classes - all running two or more 12" subs to my 2 x 10" subs), the next highest in our Class having been 129'ish dB, and we were blown away by how well we were doing for something that had started out simply as, "Why not! Should be a laugh, eh?"...

Our first run of 133.7dB automatically qualified us for the Street A Class final, and we watched the drag-off which wound up with us coming up against a stock, beaten up looking VS Commodore that was running Rockford Fosgate Amps and a 12" Rockford Fosgate Sub.

He ran a 132 flat (a 4.3dB improvement on his PB for the qualifying rounds)

We pulled 133.5dB and took the win for our Class.

    Woo Hoo!!!

The Winners Certificate - a frame-worthy piece for sure!

Special thanks for the day go to Peter Russell of http://deceptionauto.com/ who originally installed my Car Stereo, piloted it on the day and moved my Zed up to the Marquee for each run (I have a broken toe that makes driving my Zed rather awkward).

    Thanks my friend!

It was great to represent the forum (as the only Zed present), to represent the Japanese 'Rice Burners' (there was only a Mitsi 380 and a Evo 8 along with my Zed) amongst a plethora of Commodores, Falcons and Torana's. Even better to come away with any prize - let alone a majorly unexpected (or even anticipated!?) first placing...

I should also mention that Peter (who I mentioned in the thread-starter), Zedmd and myself did the install all by ourselves in Peter's garage. We also made the Amp shelf and the sub box from scratch, both of which are fully contoured to the shelf mounting points and the rear hatch plastics. For what amounts to a "Back-yardy", it all came together astonishingly well and even impressed the pro's at BDL and Audiotech who do installs for a living...

Pete and Zedmd - couldn't have done it without ya!
