Are pods and BOVs legal?

Hey I have a couple of questions as to what is legal/illegal in your car.
I have heard a few different versions.

    1. Are BOV's illegal?

    2. Are Pod's illegal? I have had one guy say that all pods are illegal, one guy say they are completely legal and a third guy say that you can only have ONE intake modification, meaning a Pod OR a front mount intercooler OR something else...

    Any help on these things.????

    Thanks.

i heard from a mate that in melbourne pod filters are illegal only if they are the oil based type instead of the dry filter not sure though.. especially in other states could be different:confused:

RedZedMikey RZM should now be DZM

    The third guy is correct.

The EPA (not police) got me for having BOV's a couple of years ago. They are illegal under Victorian EPA legislation, I can't comment on other states.

He didn't see my pod filter, guess he didn't know where to look ;) ;), but research revealed the one only intake mod thing: Either
    1. You can fit a larger intercooler/s. This applies to fitting a front mount, or fitting larger sidemounts, or
    2. You can fit a pod filter, which must have a dry element (non-oiled), or
    3. You can do the 3rd thing, and I'm stuffed if I can remember what that was also!!!

dunno about Melbourne but it's hard to know what's legal and what isn't here.. on the DPI website in WA it seems there's just a short list of what's allowed, small list of what isn't and just about everything else you have to call them about and/or get a permit, can't even find anything about wheel spacers. I guess if they make it easy for us to know what's legal they won't make so much money on defects.

    bov's and pod's

Go Fast Bits have bought out an electronic controlled bov. That you can switch in cabin from the option of plub back or atmosphere.

Which would be great fun to have a copper pull you up and argue with you lol

A plumback style bov gives you all the benefits that BOV's offer over stock recircs (not much unless your car is pretty modified) while still being road legal.

The reason atmo style are illegal is because losing that small amount of air changes your A/F ratio (however slightly) and therefore your emissions.

Strange, I have RTA issued permits for Front mounted intercooler, Hybrid BOV's, K&N oiled cone filter. As well as for the roll cage, huge exhaust and racing pedals.

    Go figure...

I was driving over to our warehouse the other night and got pulled up at an RBT. The officer told me to turn off my car and pop the bonnet. I got done for front mount, exhaust, BOV, boost controller, loose pipes in engine bay, pod filter, gauges mounted on dash and no 'h' pattern on gear knob.

This is in NSW and I have to get cleared by an engineer. I'm just going to get and engineers certificate for it anyway.

    Not happy Jan.

Well you've obviously been plugging the coppers wife/daughter/mother to piss him off so much;) . All that and also fined for no h pattern on the gear knobs a bit rough!

How stupid do they want their general public? Hmm, wonder what gear I am in, oh wait I'll take my eyes off the road and look at my H pattern sticker to give me a rough idea.

What I'd like to know is how did you go with the attitude test. The last copper that pulled me over tried his absolute BEST to get me to erupt in anger, but after I asked him what his intentions were and the yellow sticker came out I just advised him to stop asking stupid questions as I wasn't interested in answering them cos it wasn't going to make any difference. Was probably the worst example of a asshole I could have encountered. Just treated him like an idiot after that if only to make me feel better, which it did! :D

I was really nice to the officer to begin with. He just really hated me (not trying to sound like a victim but it's true). First thing he said was 'whats with the custom paintwork mate?' I said 'they're stickers to advertise the company I work for' so he said pop the bonnet and turn the engine off. I have the stock bov blocked off and he had a go at me about that. I said 'are you seroiusly having a go at me about not having a BOV? Because that has to be a first'. He then found the Blitz one mounted next to the cooler  .

He said 'I know cars, I can see you have a fake K&N pod filter.' I didn't bother to tell him to read it.

    It was last week btw.

He said because I was cooperative that there was no fine. I'm not that fussed, it happens. Oh yeah, sleeping with his wife may have had something to do with it.

I have the Nismo 'H' pattern sticker mounted on the ashtray. They didn't see it and I pointed it out when they came back but he said, sorry but i've already written it down. Thats why these gear knobs come with the stickers, to stop being defected. How many times do you look at your 'h' pattern to see where to change gears to?

In victoria you are allowed ONE in take mod... Be it pod, intercooler etc etc...

But who is going to stop you from modding the car... Even if you get an engineers that allows you to have such mods they can still give you a nice yellow sticker even tho the mods have been approved... Its a joke if you ask me... A police officers best defence is a yellow sticker and i was told that by a police officer one time... You will get the ones that are good then you will get ones who are out to get import cars... Does not even matter if its a car that has no mods at all even if its a brand new car... I have seen a couple of brand new magna's with defects at some car events with no mods at all with defect stickers... At the end of the day if they are not out to try and raise money then what are they doing because thats all i see...

Maybe it's different in your state? Who knows...

A mate of mine had an experience with the highway trying to defect him for an FMIC in his silvia. He told them that he was a mechanic -which he is- and that the FMIC was legal provided he hadn't cut through any structual components -which he had. Anyways cops didn't question him just "on your way sir" so I think alot of it depends on the issuing officer.

Another one is apparently you're required to have your timing covers on for RWC but there must be heaps of cars running sans covers that get passed every year.

    In qld...

Up here in QLD, BOV's are a matter of debate and I haven't heard of anyone being done for one in the last 2 years or so. Intercoolers are perfectly legal too, provided you don't make your car unroadworthy for other reasons like if it hangs down too low or you cut structural parts of the car to fit it. Pod filters a cool too as long as you don't loose cold air induction if the car has it from factory. So on a Z it's all cool, and on a silvia or someting you're supposed to have some sort of airbox around the filter.
