Hey everyone, My car runs perfectly (touch wood) however, during the night when I turn my lights on and stereo, my cars rpm drops to about 650-700rpm (hunts) and gets a loudish bearing noise from the front. We have linked it to being the alternator. When all elecs are off, the car doesnt make any noise etc. I need to get my alternator rebuilt. I was wondering if I pulled it out myself, can I press the bearings out and get new ones put in? Or should I just get the entire unit rebuilt? How much would it cost? and is there anybody in Melbourne who can do it good? Thanks, Adam. :zlove:
Get a multi meter and put it across the battery terminals to see what voltage you are getting.Should be around 13 - 14 volts with the motor running. Then turn the headlights on and see if it's the same.If it is the altenator is more than likely o.k.It would be cheaper to remove it yourself and take it to a auto electrician if you could.A consult test would show if it's a faulty regulator or brushes in the alternator.
ohh if thats the case, I can get a reconditioned one for $400 including removed/fitted. I may as well go there. Thanks all
