Hey Guys, I just had to call the RAC to help start my car. Flat battery, he jump started it then run his meter over it. the alternator wasnt working. He hit the Alternator with a long soccet extension and the alternator kicked into gear. Started charging. He did mention that could stay like that for 12months or cut out tomorrow. So he recommended going to see an auto electrician. I have to go to an auto electrician about this soon. How much do I expect to pay for a new Alternator? or a recycled one? Do these zeds run on ordinary alternators or are they exotic expensive buggars? Can anyone give me an idea? Also do we have any members in this 300zx club that are specialised mechanics in Perth that work on Zeds? A lot of mechanics dont wanna touch them, due to the tight fit etc. If anyone could help it would be appreciated. Thanx Bobby
i picked up a high output 140amp alternator for 300zx from america recently for $450 or you can go a standard one (80-90amp) from the states for about 150-200, not terribly sure how much they would be here, but an easy enough job to do yourself too, just bolts strait on
you got an NA or TT? i have a spare NA one sitting in my garage at the moment if you get desperate - better off getting it rebuilt though. ask loudnproud aka Josh - he knows a guy who has rebuilt a few and is supposed to do a pretty sweet deal. have you looked at replacing yourself? do a search, there may be a tech on it. i recently pulled mine out but was pulling the whole motor so had to remove a lot of stuff - in your case it would be a lot different but might still be worth a go! otherwise in perth, talk to Tom PZP, not sure on his contact details though. do a search (sensing a trend here? ) and he might be able to help you out. cheers Jay
Cheers for that I might take you up on that. I just have a query in regards to the original cause of why it buggarred up. I have only had this car since April '08 On saturday the 20/10/08 I used my air con for the first time since I got ther car. I'm curious whether this had any effect on the Alternator dying on me. Could there be an electrical fault somewhere within the Aircon system.? Or dya think it was dying anyhow and the extra work load brought its death forward a few days? I'm thinking I might need to go n see a Auto sparky.. Bobby
