Well.. Currently 18 years of age. And as you can imagine I wanna go fast lol
But everyone is on my back about not putting a turbo on my n/a.. As I am not very mechanical minded, what sort of mods can I legally do to improve my performance? I have a magnificent looking car thanks to BADZX and I just want it to perform the way it looks :)

    Mods for NA:

    Headers + full 2.5" exhaust
    Pod
    Tune

Is it auto or manual? If Auto, add shift kit... Thats about it really... Well.... short of major engine internal upgrades... :)

Meh.... They are right. Learn to drive first before getting power. The NA zed is a very quick car itself. Save the money and buy a nice TT when on your opens.

Going fast when inexperienced will kill you. Seen it on the bike forums where this way is more exagerated. Do a defense driving course and the tlc107 advance driving course, I Reccomend them and they helped me refine my driving a lot.

All I did to my NA was put a pod filter on. You can go and burn thousands on parts for maginal HP increase but it's not worth it imho...

In the end it's up to you, listen to the more experienced guys on here though and youl be right.

Keep the NA, do suspension mods, save for a tt conversion.

    Noting you are 18yrs old, and have a zed you will be a magnet for any police officer. I suggest that you do the following;
    1. Address your "limited" mechanical knowledge. You are in Vic, there are heaps of Zed owners there that will be willing to help. Organise a Tech Day, put on a few sausages and ask them to just have a look at your car.
    2. Do not start modifying your zed, at least not until you are sure it is running 100% right. You could spend thousands on exhausts, pod filters, and similar go fast bits which might extract 1 or 2 hp. When in reality a bit of maintenance, like an injector clean could gain you 20hp, and more efficient fuel usage.
    3. Want to go fast. Take it to Phillip Island, and after you spend a whole day racing then come back and see what you want to address first with performance. (I'll bet it won't be the engine, but the brakes). Contact Wykked, or Peter Black, or BADZX, via PM and they will guide you. And, don?t be apprehensive, it is a bit overwhelming to start with but after you do one you will wonder why you were even concerned.
    4. And, lastly don't try and modify a NA to make it a TT, save you money to buy one when off your Ps (or buy one now and do it up, it will be ready by the time you are off your Ps). I spent over $15k to modify a NA in 1997-2002, to achieve the peak power of a stock TT. It had horrific (read no) low to mid range torque, it had to be revved like crazy to get anywhere, was not road worthy, and once fully modified it lasted for two race meetings before it disassembled itself out the right hand side of the engine block.

tell your friends to worry about themselves and not your car? what are they kids or something

don't bother modding an n/a it would probably get smashed by a new camry off the lights anyway

If your mates are on their P plates they shouldn't be talking about all show no go, from my experience an NA Z > Most P plate legal cars. Hell a lot of turbo cars on standard boost won't be much, if at all, quicker then an NA Z.....from what i've seen atleast. Remember this, your driving skill comes before engine performance mods.

I've done the driving course :) Learnt heaps. Just a little FYI for all those who don't know know, BADZX or Kingy is actualy my old man ha done the pods and exhaust. Just didn't like the fact that off the line my mates vt and vy were better :-/
And surprisingly enough I've never been pulled over :0 cops see my car, they have a good look but then decide to pull over the duoche driving the commy with stockies haha
Plus I don't peel every chance I get like most platers, I know the cost of my tyres and I don't wanna replace em to often.
BADZX has informed me of a few mods available but I still wanted to hear what other "experienced professionals" had to say :) thanks for the tips

    K1ngz,

Also in a similar situation as you. Also 18, own a NA Auto. I find my Z powerfull enough, I don't think I want to look at getting anything upgraded to make it go "faster". It's got plenty of power as it is... If you value your licence like I do then you won't want to go faster. Can you imagine your life if you had your licence taken off you? I'd be fairly gutted if it happened to me...

I'm also not mechanically minded but after some help from a couple of forum members, in the past 1-2 weeks i've learnt a shit load more then what I used to know.

My advice as someone in the same position as you would be: Enjoy the power that you have now (my Z shits over my old mans XR6), don't be stupid and go losing your licence or worse, killing yourself or other road users, who are you looking to impress here? "Da Boyz" with the power or the girls with the looks? I garauntee most chicks won't want you driving excessively fast.

Off the lights a VT/VY shouldn't give you any trouble, unless you aren't really launching it to get the best out of your car. Take those cars to the track and watch them both run 16's, yours should do a mid-low 15 easily.

quite a few of us are in the same spot,

im 19, had the Zed as my first car and it isnt slow. ive driven non turbo skylines and the likes and i honestly have more fun driving the zed. smoked an xr6t off the lights the other day too :). only thing my car has is an exhaaust. one thing i will recommend doing is cleaning and maintaining whats already under the bonnet instead of adding new stuff to it. once i have had a few years under the belt then i will be buying a nice tt. the money im saving now not buying stupid stuff for the na will help fund that. enjoy it, dont kill it or urself.

    Couldn't agree more.

But like someone else mentioned, if you can't smoke a VT/VY off the lights then something isn't right...

Hi guys, not to hi-jack the thread but as we've been given a rough estimate of $/kW on modifying and NA; what will a TT conversion cost roughly excluding all other mods and looking at both parts and labour for a well maintained Z? Not paricularly using all OEM components but to achieve similar or better power and response?

  16. SRB-2NV

    SRB-2NV #TEAMROB

I can get a TT conversion done for about $5000, thats with me knowing a guy with his own shop and that can get parts for me at cost price. I wouldn't bother with converting an NA, much cheaper and easier to buy a TT.

That's true but I've already sunk quite a bit of money into my NA getting the exterior and interior how I want it. Tbh I'd probably end up modifying a stock TT for more power anyway. I might have to get in contact with Eric and seek some advice. Still got 2 years left on my P's so I've got a while to think about it.

dont bother doing anything to it. consider this your driving apprenticeship. save your money, learn as much as you can and wait till you;ve done your time.

IF i wanted a fast car and i was restricted by p plate laws i would probably be looking at an old BMW 2.3 six , bomb the motor out as much as possible without givign anythign away under the bonnet, or a gutted s13 with a RB30/25DE

but then you dont have the looks, comfort or handling of a 300zx.

If you want to go fast within the restrictions of the p plate rules then u got the wrong car son

  19. SRB-2NV

    SRB-2NV #TEAMROB

Engine swaps are illegal on your P's so 25/30 Sil is out of the picture. Nothing wrong with an NA zed, a 14 second pass is fast for a P plater and a 300ZX will do it easily enough.

a n/a zed is 500 kg heavier than id want a n/a car to be.
