I recently developed the gurgling sound behind the front drivers wheel, after checking in the Tech setcion it sounds like the AIV. I am not to mechanically minded but would like some advice/pro-cons on wether to fix or remove the unit. Can removal cause any long term damage or problems with the running. Norm
Removing the AIVs is a simple process and will not cause any long term damage/problems to your engine. Unforuntately for me, i developed an electrical problem i think is due to my removal of the front wheel splash gaurds that i could have avoided if i had known how to remove the splash gaurd clips without breaking them. But mechanically i have had no problems what so ever. I have a complete NA AIV system removal tech guide with lots of pictures which should be very helpful to you. I was like you and at the time not very mechanical but it was very fun remove the system and remember nissan removed this system from the 94 zeds onwards so its kinda like an upgrade.
keep that throaty GURGLE .... it adds at least 10rwkw to an N/A ..... a great sound ...., love it ...!!!!
just disconnect the wiring to the solenoids no need to remove the whole lot. not worth the hassle. once you get an aftermarket set of front pipes you can remove the stupid aiv exhaust pipes
i know, was curious to see if this article was different. i like to read a couple of articles if i can to get as much info as i can.
pm sent with tech artilke links. Its not that much of a hassel to remove your aivs. i did it very slowly and was finished within 3 - 4 hours. If i was doing it in a race i could of got it down within an hour. The hardest part is blocking the exhaust pipes.
Tech Articles I found about 3-4 artucles in the Tech sectiona and another from US would they be the same. The quickest fix at the moment is to disconnect the solenoids then.
Or you could just drain the water out of the rubber hoses (or drill a small hole if you prefer) and have working AIV's again. The AIV's let air into the exhaust during a cold start along with extra fuel into the engine which gets nice and hot in the cats which warms them up. Cats only work above a certain temperature, and below that temp they don't do a lot. If you want a full '94 conversion, rip them out and get a '94+ ecu tune.
I found a much easier way to plug the exhaust which does not require any modifications to the exhaust/AIV piping; http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=268972 the hard part is removing the existing AIV metal pipes fromt the exhaust to install the plug fittings Cheers
Nah you dont have to undo the fittings. I just cut them off with an angle grinder. Then weld the ends of the nuts up. Takes all of 5 mins to do both.
Recently removed my AIv system completely. Mind you the car had after market exhaust so the system was not connected to the exhaust piping. Just get behind the wheels and remove all the gear. Also you can remove the air tanks behind the guards without removing the guards. Might need to undo and move a bracket and wiring, but it can be done. Ran some new sislicone hose in the engine bay and presto, :zlove: If you need to chat call me. 0425 304 772. Cheers Bruce
Removal Is it illegal then to remove the AIV unless you have the later 95 exaust system where it wasnt included. Just if it had to go over pits would it pass.
