    Hey guys,

Basically need some advice on the car dying pretty much all the time, now it's a 2+2 jap spec twin turbo... The car drive boosts fine, no ecu error codes... But.. We did fine that the tps is set all the way back. And it's running an auto ecu. Also the clutch fan is really loud in it.

Just when the car stops it starts spluttering and dies. It's a 1991 model and has a series 2 ptu in it.

I just have no idea what's wrong with it. When I took It for a test drive this morning it was fine. Ran fine with no problems.

    Can anyone help me out?

    Cheers,

No problem running an auto ECU in a manual. When you say that the TPS is set all the way back, what do you mean? should be set to .45v, then disconect TPS at grey plug for 30secs then reconnect. If this doesnt sort the issue out then look at the IACV, or maybe you have an air leak.

Ah, so many things could be wrong....

As Martin says start with the easiest first... reset the tps.
    then test that its correct:

if you can check the timing, its a very common fault when fitting new timing belts (particularly non-OEM) for it to be wrong.

usually if one thing is out there will be other as well... to compensate.

Thank you all, I will be trying this out on the weekend with SRB2NV as its been at least a year and a half since I even looked at a zed... I've been told that the throttle bodies may need adjusting and they might be closing fully when in neutral so were gonna look at that aswell, the car is pretty stock and has had the major service done... From what I've been told. I have to get all the receipts from the dealership, also looks to have an oil leak from the back of the motor... Sump area, ill have to get it up on stands just to take a look.

But this weekend the tps will be reset and ill grab an ecu talk off a friend tonight and see what the problems are and get a proper tps readout.

Thanks a lot guys. Ill keep you updated.

Static timing should be done with a timing light off of the #1 cylinder. Viewing your timing through ECUTalk is going to show you the timing as 'corrected' by the ECU which is not the same.

0.42V set on the TPS seems to be the sweet spot. You must also ensure at the same time that your hard idle switch is engaged.

Ensure both throttle bodies are closing fully. If they don't, then there will be less air passing through the AAC to be metered. Ensure that after both throttle bodies are closing, thet are both sync'd with each other. I've done a semi How-To on this on 3ZC.

If the fan clutch is very loud, then it needs to be changed ... and quickly.
Replace with an oem unit (new or used) as after market ones are failure prone.
Ensure you get an oem TT one that has a yellow dot on the front of it (orange or red dot in front is for an NA). I would also check your current fan clutch to see if in fact it's an after market one.

If your fan clutch is messed up, chances are you're running too hot as well which could be one of the reasons for poor performance. Does or has the oem coolant temp gauge ever gone past the middle position?
Are you running the oem fan shroud?

What brand/make/type/# is your spark plugs?
Did you install them yourself? Did you gap them or install straight out of the box? What gap were they set to?

Well guys I would have tried all this on Saturday but I took it to a mechanic and he has told me that there was a head gasket problem. Wasn't blown but it was cracked. The old owner before giving it to the dealership gave them a full head kit with gasket and thermostat as it was overheating.

So basically I told him to fix the car under warranty and he said it won't cover it... So I gave the car back to him and walked. I'm not gonna spend thousands rebuilding the heads of the zed just to have something else f**k up...(excuse the language)... Also upon being guaranteed that the 100k service has been done i found a whole bunch of tensioners in the boot along with a brand new timing belt... i dont have the time to pull the motor apart or the space so I'm just gonna save my money and buy a TT with no engine problems and do a manual conversion if its auto or just buy a manual. Whatever pops up when I have the cash.

I got royally screwed on that deal and I let him know it. He wasn't really happy cause he wouldn't make commission... But while I was there a guy came and asked for the zed and I told him what was wrong with it... He couldn't leave any faster.

Cheers for the advice guys. Ill let you all know when I get my next TT.

    Sorry to hear.
Is there no legal route you can take to recoup your losses?

It's okay, I really only lost $50 or so.

Umm not really a legal route to take, I pretty much traded my forged 20 Valve blacktop corolla for $1,000 and then I was paying it off.. But cause off paying it off I wouldn't have anything left to save towards the engine pull with the heads getting built and if I'm gonna pull apart a VG30 you might aswell to turbos and forgies cause knowing my luck we'll drop the motor back in only to have another problem.

So he gave me the corolla back and he took the zed, we tore up the paperwork and I walked out. If I got to keep the corolla I would have kept the zed, cause then I could have it sitting at home while I saved up slowly to do the motor. But this was t the case. I might buy a auto TT and do a manual conversion on it... Seen a few nice ones for cheap.

Ill keep you guys updated.. Cheers.

Hey, glad you came out of that one OK....

I know some people will disagree with me but these are old cars that a quite complicated and so need a lot of time money and care spent on them.

not really the car to have on a budget..

best of luck if you decide to get one and make sure you check it out well. :)

    Thanks mate,

Well I would have kept it but cause it was a payment type purchase there wasn't much room left for saving after I paid it every 2 weeks. But I'm looking at an clean auto that's fairly cheap with no rego and planning to do a manual conversion. (See other thread)
