What are the differences between buying a J-Spec or Australian delivered Z?

What are the pros and cons of buying an Aus-spec Z vs. a J-spec?

Briefly, Nissan in Australia only ever sold 2+2 NA Z's. Therefore, if you want a TT or 2 seater NA it will have come from Japan (be a J-Spec vehicle). So, if you want a TT then it must be J-spec, but if you are looking at an NA and don't have any major preference for 2 seater or 2+2, the following differences may be of interest to you:

    - All J-spec Z's had power seats, Aus-Spec Z's did not.

    - J-Spec Z's up to 1995 had climate control, after that it was an option. 1989-1993 Aus-spec Z's had manual control, but got climate control late 1993.

    - Aus-spec Z's have a combination indicator/marker light at the front, while J-Spec Z's have driving lights (often called fog lights) and the indicators on the side. This is sometimes changed to Aus specification when the J-Spec Z is complianced in Australia.

    - Aus-Spec Z's have foglights on the rear bumper, while J-Spec Z's have the small red side markers on the side of the rear bumper.

    - Minor changes such as badging: J-Spec's get the Z badge on the nose, Aus-spec's get no badge or the Nissan 'hamburger' logo, J-Specs have Fairlady decals on the back, etc.

    - Aus-Spec T-tops are lockable

    - Aus-Spec rear bar has wider gap to fit Aussie number plate

    - Minor interior differences such as Fairlady floor mats in J-Spec Z's, as well as some of the J-Spec optional features (which are rare) such as illuminated rear panel, naVan gearknob options, etc.

The bigger issue is the quality of the car. There is no reason to assume that Japanese drivers are any better or worse than Australian's when it comes to maintenance and driving style, and so Japanese cars are no better or worse on average compared to Australian cars. However, the grey import industry does have some very questionable individuals involved, more so than typical used car dealers or the private seller. As such, there are more poor condition Z's brought from Japan which are patched up to look good, and mileage is so often wound back that it's totally unreliable on any car. While all of this can be done to Aus-spec Z's, it is simply less likely.... there are still of course some very good quality Z's in Japan, but there are slightly higher risks involved that you'll unknowingly get a bit of a tired car.
