    URGENT HELP NEEDED.

My wife just bought a 300zx and used the heater for the first time last night. Today on her way home from work when using the heater the car over heated.
I have checked the fuses, oil, water and coolant. All seem fine.

When the car is idling and i turn on the heater there is i high pitched wining sound and then the engine cuts out all together.

I noticed one of the fan belts looks like it is not on the track properly and on the lip of the round cog/or what ever you call them.

    Could this be the problem?

    Thanks in advance.
    Justin

The a/c compressor may be seized.

Which belt is not running true? If it is the passenger side bottom I would agree with K-zed and say seized a/c compressor.

Overheating can be contributed to alot of other factors aswell, radiator, thermostat, viscous fan etc.

Thanks for your help. It looks like the belt directly in front of the drivers side. The one closest to the top. Is that the a/c belt?

Ok tks for that. Is a/c stand for air conditioner? If it is the a/c is it expensive to replace or fix? Should i hit the guy up who we just bought it from? Do you think he would have known this?

    Cheers

    That's the power steering belt.

    Yes, A/C is aircon.

    Update:
Took it past a mechanic down the road. They had a look and did some tests and said its the a/c compressor that has seized. They just cut the belt for it and all is good now, well it runs well, just no air con and a new a/c compressor is around $1000. !!

Gonna have a look around for a second hand one. Any ideas where to look?
Thank goodness its winter time so we have a fer months to get this fixed.

    Thanks again for your input.

    1000 for a new compressor?

sounds like a bend em over and drop your pants price, coz sells em for a lot less that that, i think you can do it without pulling the engine. Suggest you pull the plenum, bypass all the heater hoses, get injectors cleaned, delete a heap of other crap egr, aiv etc, do 100k if it aint been done and give the loom some tlc...a heap of work to do, many birds one stone..luckily your in qld and we have a disproportionate large amount of zed mechanics if you dont wanna diy it.

If you can get a non seized A/C compressor that works, all great. If one ever needs rebuilding fully, it's about $600 + R&R from the car.
You can recondition certain parts of the compressor for less, but not worth it IMHO if it comes to the crunch

New from COZ is about US$600+post IIRC. Easy enough to change with the engine in the car, you might need to drop the crossmember though. I'd pull the engine and do all that other stuff though :)

You can R&R an air con compressor in the car no probs. No dropping Xmembers either. It's a bit fiddly but pull the radiator and it's not too bad.

Only 6 bolts and then connect the hoses and one cable.

Stumpy rachet spanners are really good for this job.
