    Hi Guys

This is my first post here so Hi to everyone!

I am in the market for a 300zx (turboed import). Unfortunately, it seems that most of the people I know are encouraging me to steer away from the 300zx and go for an R33 Skyline. In terms of price, I find they are roughly the same.

Personally, I think the 300 is a great car (im sure you all agree!). In terms of performance though, can the Z match the skyline? Admitedlly Ive only driven the NA version. I liked everything about it, but I am just keeping all my options open at the moment, hence my questions about the R33.

What do you think is the better car?

PS I am relatively new to the import scene, so please excuse my lack of knowledge, but I am learning more all the time!!

    welcome to the forum

First you need to define exactly what aspects of performance your talking about. Then we can go from there.
Obviously the guys here are going to prefer the 300, but the r33 is still a nice car, just depends what you want.

Hi and welcome. Now some simple things to help you.....

    Firstly.

Z will whoop a skylines ass any day of the week.

As i'm sure the forum will kindly point at me being the main offender on that one.

Biggest problems you find with 300's are that if you don't do your homework when looking for one, you'll end up with a heft Bill.

Thats easily solved by joining this forum, asking a Z enthusiast to go along with you and run a conzult and a couple other tests to see if the car is worth the bother.

You'll find the Z is a very quick car if it's a TT and still a quick car if NA.

Handling of the 300's is very smooth and corners will seem like they don't exist as long as your not doing 250km into the corner that is. (Learnt the hard way).

R33's are way too common or so it seems living on the Gold Coast (Skyline City)whereas the 300 are seen a lot less and you'll ALWAYS get that  look as you drive down the street.

300Zx says, Speed, Style and CLASS.

Welcome to the forum, and i hope that other Zedders can give you a bit better advice than I did.

You might want to fill in your profile details as this will help you greatly.

    Cheers

Fate, Hopefully i'll see you round. (sideways)

    hey buddy

Im usually more of a 'street commodores' kind of person. I feel so dirty just being here lol

So far your the only person I know thats been pro Z over the skyline, I prefered it which is what counts at the end of the day I suppose. But still, never hurts to hear more peoples opinions. Plus that way, It gives me more ammo to throw Troy's and a certain WRX owners way when they give me their 'advice' ;)

And thanks fate for the tips. I will fill out my details properly as soon as I get a chance. Im 'working' now so I skipped that bit :D

    No worries

The Japification begins ;) (cue Turning Japanese music)soon you'll be quoting power figures in PS and watching initial D. But seriouusly either Skyline or 300 will be good in my books and if individuality is worth anything then lean towards the Z, remember other than driver error my Z has been fairly good (mechanically speaking) so the next money i will spend will be on driver training then ima smoke you and Frank on the carts

    I certainly prefer the 300ZX

The 300ZX does not have the best reputation but a great deal of that is due to ignorance and the dissemination of misinformation.

Many of the people who give advice about the 300ZX have never owned or even driven one. It is important to make your own choice based on facts rather than hearsay and conjecture.

One of the things you have to ask yourself is what do you want out of your vehicle? What qualities are you looking for and who sections of the community do you want to impress.
I personal love the look of the 300ZX, I love the performance and the way it makes me feel when I am driving it, I love the handling and I love the attention it gets.
To me the 300ZX represents a great deal more class than the R33, and many of the girls I go out with or associate with agree.
Performance wise the 300ZX has it all over the R33 (unless you are talking about the GTR which a stock 300ZX would struggle against - easily fixed though). I have embarrassed numerous R33 drivers.
The handling of the 300ZX is really quite exceptional and I use to routinely out perform and corner my brothers WRX.

On the down side, the 300ZX can be a pretty expensive beast to maintain so you have to work out what you can budget for.

My suggestion is test drive a good example of both and go from there.

    Yep, I agree

300zx is definately what I want. I suppose its just that Ive read so much about the RB26DET engine but never anything about the V6 in the 300 (dont know what is called yet, im stil trying to get over the fact that its a V6 with less than 3.8 litres capacity so cut me some slack :p )

And by the way Adam, the only reason im looking at something that is not a V8 is because I want something different, just for a change. So you just go put that gong away or Ill gong you the next time I see ya

    For-giv-in-ess please (

 Good to here there may be another Z in the family soon. Hopefully i can convince my parents to let me keep mine (fingers crossed)then we're all set for a mini Z club cruise lol. We might drag Troy along and it can be an all Nissan affair, interesting to hear people say that the VG30DETT, which is the Z's engine (for future reference) has the balls to take it to r33's and even GTR's with minimal mods!! Although i'd wager it would need more than chopped springs to worry a rexy through the tight and tricky stuff, actually not to keen to try at the moment, gotta learn to drive first.

simple facts i reckon are here:thumbsup:

    1. skyline cheaper and easier to mod
    2. more bang for buck from mods on Z
    3. more skyline parts around (aftermarket and standard)
    4. Z's look better stock (personal opinion)
    5. Skylines can look good with the right kit/rims combo
    6. Z's will handle better stock (and way better with aftermarket suspension).
    7. straight line a Z will whip a GTS-T any day of the week
    8. problems probably more common on a Z and definately more expensive to fix
    9. gear box in a Z actually feels like a sports car gear box rather than the skylines vague commodore like thing ( i actually had a 5 speed commodore, and the box was nicer in that than my mates r33).

couple of things off the top of my head. also my NA Z would only get beaten by 0.4 of a second by a GTS-T using the same G-tech on the same piece of private road.

As Stated earlier my Z out cornered by brothers REX

Even with a stock suspension setup I could enter corners a lot faster than him and maintain the speed around them. The only thing I couldn't do was open the throttle mid corner, but I only needed to do that when he was in front slowing me down.

    gotta go for the zed

i think it was june's High Performance Import magazine put the Z32 up against a R33 GTS and the zed killed it in every category except handling which is understandable considering skylines are all wheel drive. i have the article if you want me to scan it in.

    welcome man

i think the real question here is will the skyline keep up with the z. the zed was spawned from a family of gt supercars, i have to say, i like the skyline, its very nice and i have a lot of respect for its potential, however, it has always felt like a family man sports car to me, its got back seat space like a statto,. where as the zed has only two seats, and even with the 2+2, there is harlde enough leg room anyway, personal opinion, thats the way i like it. and with you being a v8 dude, you can appreciate the value of cubic inches, that the zed engine has over the skyline. but, these comparos have been done a billion time before, it all comes down to personal preference. my both my mates have skyline, and i chop both of them every time, but they still love their skylines over the zed. goodluck and welcome.

Actually only the GTR and GTS4 (which is NA) are AWD.

THE R33 GTS and GTST are both rear wheel drive. Knowing HPI they probably put a tired 1989 300ZX up against a well maintained 1996/97 R33. Although that would make me cynical.

    90TTZ Back From The Dead

Hey Dude, wlecome to the forum!!!

I have had an interest for the Z32 Twin Turbo for many years, I even started a conversion into a HX 1 Tonner but the cost of importing a Zed prematurely ended that affair. I took delivery of my Zed just over a week ago. For a 15 year old vehicle I was smiles from ear to ear and even more so once I starting driving it. I have been a Commodore man, a VS SS and a supercharged V6 VN have been through my garages. Also driven an R33 GTST and was most impressed by it's high reving power. But what can I say, I will never look back at the Lion and Stone (except for the family wagon I have) the Zed is a much better built car, the engine is smoother more powerful and more economical, the interior is not the best but still very nice for it's age and who can argue about that stance a Zed has:zlove: As previous posts have stated, make sure you do your research before you decide on one, have seen some very poor examples out there and will cost a fortune getting up to scratch.

Michalis! Get a Zed, they rock "biased of course"

Do your homework tho, I did and the only things I have had to fix so far have been due my use of the car, eg tyres due to track days and a clutch cause of the drags and with minor mods it smashes GTST's and keep tabs on some nice GTR's on the track.

    Go the Zed!:zlove:

Zeds are a beautiful car to drive. Quick, stylish, handle well and look very cool IMHO. Less of them around than Skylines which seem to be everywhere so they draw more attention! Both cars are good and both can be worked to provide awesome power, looks and overall performance. I just love the ZED :zlove: and if you get one, you will not have any regrets. Just make sure you pick a REALLY GOOD ONE. Get it checkout by someone who knows ZEDS!

    Good luck with your decision!
    Cheers:thumbsup:

Re: I have a Zed my partner has a r33 Gtst series 2

they are both great cars, but it depends on the body shape, if you like to sporty looking car that is sleek then the Zed is the go, if you like the family looking one then the skyline is the one personnal choise................hee hee

    Go on, take the skyline...

hehe, just thought i'd throw a cat amongst the pigeons here. i've owned a couple of r33's so i may be a little biased ;).
my only advice would be drive a few examples of both cars in modified and stock form, work out what you like/dislike about all of them, then work out what you want the car for and whether you will be happy with the decision you have made in 6 months time.
both cars can be expensive to fix, especially if mods have been installed badly. i'd go for reasonably stock if you don't have a lot of knowledge of the car, that way your mods can grow with your knowledge.
i think ultimately it should come down to your gut instinct, which car is it that you keep thinkin about after driving. remember as well that everyones advice is biased, including mine.
    my 2 cents :)
