Hey peeps, in an attempt to yet again get some legal ride height under my z i have decided to play with the idea of putting some 20" rollers under her instead of using airbags..

So i Have a couple of query's to ask ( n yes i did use the search 1st  )

    1. Roughly! how much more height should i expect to gain over having 18's ( i need atleast 40mm ) But i could prob shave a little out of my front bar sumwhere if it comes down to it..

    2. With guards rolled will i have any issues with scrubbing, even on the od track day?

    3. anything else i should know about havin 20's

    Thanks
    Jess

    no good

you'd just be replacing your illegal ride height with illegal tyre diameter, it needs to be pretty close to factory, something like 10-20mm and you'd need 80mm to gain 40mm in ride height.

    Ride height.

Why are you concerned about ride height? If it's because you may be "pinged" by the police, then what is the point in going to illegal sized wheels & tyres which will still get you "pinged"?
Isn't it smarter to fit new springs to achieve the desired result?
Larger wheels and tyres will also affect your speedo readings, which could also result in getting "pinged".
Give up, sell the car, and start walking (better be careful crossing the street though, you may "Jay-walk", which can also get you "pinged" ).:LOL::LOL:

I'm afraid I have to agree with Chili (what am I saying  ) ....

This solution will permanently solve your defect problems and if you still want to look cool in the carpark (with the zed sitting on the ground effect) you could let down all your tyres  . Just make sure you take your electric pump with you.

I wouldn't suggest this option because you are likely to be run over by a zed with a driver (worried about getting "pinged") too busy looking out for the constabulary to notice a pedestrian

    Other Options

As the others have said, going to 20s will not give you much (if any) more ground clearance because the tyre shop will put lower profile tyres on the new 20s to make them similar in size to the OEM wheels

If you wanted bigger rolling diameter a cheaper option would be to put some 4WD tyres on your current wheels (like 245/50/18).

But its illegal to have wheels which have an outside diameter (wheel+tyre) that is more than 15mm larger than stock. Therefore both options are illegal.

And if your car is low, stuffing 8cm more wheel under your arches aint gonna be easy (probably end up costing much more than an airbag setup)!

    Why not consider these options:
    * A set of springs which are at legal height - change them each time you get 'pinged' (you'll get to be quite proficient in changing springs!)
    * Coilovers - as above but it will be quicker and easier to do
    * Roberuta Cup system - These are a 'cup' that sits between the upper mount of a coilover and the coilover spring. Its attached to an air compressor and it allows you to raise the car by approx 5cm at will, but when lowered it is just like a set of coilovers
With these you can just raise the car when the cop is behind you!

    Problem is..

My z is at standard ride height now.. its the kit that is soo low.. cant 20's be engineered?? i dont want to have to stuff around playin wit springs all the time and i dont want to put in springs that raise my car above standard ride height wrecking the great centre of gravity these things already got.. i want a car i can jump in and not have to worry every time i get pulled over for RBT..

Also im not worried bout a change of speedo.. there is a thing called callibration..

Im in a tough place here.. I like bags but $$$ relocation of shocks etc havin a tank in the back etc, sounded easier to chuck some bigger rims on..

Oh yer n sell my z... honestly... thats gota be one of the stupidest things i ever heard, no offence

putting 20" rims on will also raise the centre of gravity

If you plan ti raise the height of the car by putting bigger rims underneath, you will still be raising the centre of gravity.

If your car is at stock height and its only the kit thats too low, just lose the kit. Simplest way.

    Re: Problem is..

if you like awesome handling, 20" rims will severely ditract from the handling as they will weigh a tonne each. also.. i dont like your chances of fitting them under there let alone purchasing the rims and tyres for less than an air bag setup.

sounds like your kit is crap and its the bit that should be changed

Not all airbag kits require the relocation of the shocks!

Infact i thought only the minitruck kits did that.

When i enquired about bagging the Cedric they told me that what they do is take the OEM strut, cut off the spring perch and weld a base plate onto the strut.

Then they mount a bag over the strut and supply a new upper mount. It ends up looking like a normal strut but with a bag in place of the spring.

Air tanks can be big, but you can also get pancake shaped tanks that go in the spare tyre location. Or even just a small cylinder; this just means you cant show off for long, it would basically allow you to drop, and then raise the car, but not much else (you would need to wait for the tank to repressurise)

    Agreed

You will pay a fortune to decrease your own handling and performance with 20" wheels, not to mention be an even bigger target as they would draw more attention. I would think you could get brand new good quality set of coilovers or airbag setup for less than the price of brand new 20" wheels with tyres. (and then the maintence and cost of replacing 20" tyres)

Besides, I love the wheels on your car as they are, and (at least IMO) 20" wheels do not look as good as 17's or 18's.

    Re: Ride height 2.

Thanks for that bit of info, I worked in a Calibration Laboratory for 11 years, you'd think I would have known that. (You can tell by the fact that I can spell "Calibration").
No, this is probably the silliest thing you've ever heard...
As none of the other suggestions meets with your approval, why not piss the body kit off, and replace it with one thats legal( as it seems to be the reason for your problems)??? No offense intended, of course.:zlove:

REMEMBER MACQUARIE PASS, Jesse (and hope Plod 1 doesn't):p:LOL:;):zlove:
