Now this really pissed me off.

New motor, new injectors, new spark plugs, new injector caps, new coilpack caps, coilpacks tested at rebuild.

Suddenly, no go on No.2........changed PTU and ECU.....still NO GO.

Decided to pull No.2 sparkplug for a look see

:eek::eek: WTF  I guess they just don't make $20 sparkplugs like they used to

    Yes, Iridium.....

That's what I'd like to know, how does a sparkplug just fall apart

I wonder if any of the ceramic chips fell into the cylinder

over tighten the spark plug maybe?

Did you get another one to throw it back in to see if the cyl 2 is working fine now?

Gotta ensure you use a spark plug socket

that has the rubber stabiliser inside. Otherwise its easy to place uneven pressure when tightening and the result can be what the above pic shows. Not impuning anyone though. With the depth of the spark plug holes inside the heads, its a task worth performing carefully.

Why did you go with the iridiums Ian?

The EXACT same thing happened with mine, found it snapped in half  was the cause of my epic missfire...

It's one thing after another with a zed....

I originally went iridium for better spark, but have been using them reliably for many years now and only switch to coppers for tuning.

This incident has NOTHING to do with iridums, it could have happened with any plug.

I always use a sparkplug socket with the rubber insert. The weird part is that the top half of the plug didn't come out with the coilpack, it came out in the plug socket  Admittedly, the rubber insert has a really strong grip. Sometimes I have to spray WD40 in the rubber to stop the socket from staying on the plug.

Overtightening won't break the ceramic because the s/s socket sits over the hex shank of the plug.
Put in another plug and working okay. It's amazing what a "one piece" plug will do for performance.

I used sticky tape on a long screwdriver to extract the large piece and made up a small hose to go on the vacuum cleaner to suck up any "granules" that may have been laying around.
