I want to get some 20" rims but i still wanna stay low as possbile with coilovers. does anyone know what the lowest i can get is with 20's?
You can go as low as you want But you will never get full lock or be able to go over speed humps or driveways. my car is lowered 3/4 an inch and i clear speedhumps by 10-20mm. i also had to buy a $250 steel ramp to be able to get up my driveway. And with heavy breaking/steering the front tyres will also scrub. depending on how stiff your suspesion is. Matt.
19" or 20" should make bugger all difference to your ride height..>> As long as the rolling diameter is the all the same then there will be no difference between 16's, 17's, 18's, etc. 19's & 20's will make the ride firm and to the point of "unenjoyable" with a decent set of coilovers. Cheers Andrew
yea well with stock 16's my car is 4" off the ground with 20's its 5" so its kind of a good thing to have bigger rims if you wanna lower your car. so the body will sit over the wheels more but stay a bit higher off the ground.
Agree May Zed scraped coming in & out of my driveway when I had 17" wheels. Now that I have 19"s I have a little more ground clearence and it no longer scrapes.
No height difference. The ONLY way your ride height will change, is if you chose the WRONG sized tyres for your bigger rims. If your car sits higher with 20" rims, then you have increased the rolling diameter of the Rim/Tyre package, and you will have an inaccurate speedo as well.
So are you saying I have the wrong profile tyres CHILI? I had 17s with 45 profile, now I have 19s with 35. Sounds correct to me. BTW I think we have disagreed on this topic before
The width of the tyre also plays a roll Because the profile value, 45, 35, etc is a ratio between the tyre's wall height and the tyre's width. In other words if your tyres are 19" 245 35 they will have a smaller rolling diameter than tyres which are 19" 295 35
Chili's rightif there is a gain in ride hight then you are getting incorrect speedo reading :thumbsdown:so watch out for the little blue flashing lights
What width 19's do you have? My rear 17's are 40's to get the correct size. With a 19 to get close to the stock rolling diameter, you would want something like 225X25R19 or 255X20R19. If you have 225X35R19, then that is illegal in most states because you have changed your tyre diameter by more than 25mm.
OK: I use to have 17" rims FRONT: 235x45x17 REAR: 255x40x17 I now have 19" rims FRONT: 235x35x19 REAR: 265x30x19 I'm already aware my speedo reads incorrect
Stock tyres are 225X50R16...>> Which have a diameter of 518.9mm add 1 inch and the maximum legal diameter is 544.3mm. 235X45R17 have a diameter of 537.55mm and 255X40R17 have a diameter of 533.8mm. Less than 544.3mm so legal. 235X35R19 have a diameter of 564.84mm and 265X30R19 have a diameter of 562.1mm. More than 544.3mm so illegal. To be legal on 19 inch wheels you would need 235X25R19 (541.35mm) and 265X20R19 (535.6mm). To be legal on 20 inch wheels you would need 235X15R20 (543.25mm) and 265X10R20 (534.5). Don't know if they make 15 or 10 profile tyres? Remember that a 20 inches is 508mm only 10mm smaller than a stock 225X50R16 tyre.
thats right so how can i have the worng tyres setup with only 10mm to play with chili? ive never seen a 10mm wall on a 20inch rim and even if they had them they would be well over $1500 per tyre
Just maybe. The Stillen SMZ might change those figures, Ian. Not 100% sure but I think you can use the 17's as a base figure as it's a factory special.
Tyre Diameters 225-50-16 = 631.4mm STD 245-30-19 = 629.6mm 19" 245-25-20 = 630.5mm 20" (Calculations done by http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html) If the 245 width will suit the wheel then the speedo will be very close
Whoops, my calculations were all out by one side wall ...>> Stock is actually 631.4mm 235X35/19 are 647.1mm and 265X30/19 are 641.6mm so they are legal. They would raise the car by 8mm plus a bit from less side wall flex. Sorry for creating confusion.
Re: excellent finding figures so i would go with a 19 x 35 - raised just a bit hrmmmm ...just my 2 centss... my mate also owns a 300 with a set of 19's on it....its not as good as you might think....he cant make fulll turns...and cant take corners fast either....so in my opinion take 18's...orrrr atleast test ur wheels for a little spin b4 u depend on them....
