175rwkw at 13.5psi Dyno reading

I went to my first zed inspection today as I am looking to buy a twin turbo manual. It was so sexy I was all keen to buy as he said the engine and turbos had been rebuilt a couple of years ago. However after my mate went for a spin he said he would expect a bit more (he used to own a tx3).

The seller showed us a dyno reading that was a pretty flat curve 175rwkw at 13.5psi. I would have thought that a 300zx would do a bit better than this at a relatively high boost. He has a catback exhaust but not many other mods.

I will get a compression test and stuff if I end up buying it but I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on the dyno reading?

    cheers!

Sounds like it has a really bad air leak in the system if its only got 175rwkws on 13.5 pound...

Get a comp test done thats for sure...

As for your mate who use to own a TX3 big different between a 4ycl motor to a V6 motor... and twin and single turbo setups... But he is right you would expect more tho...

From my understanding a stock TT manual puts out around 183rwkws as 300Hp at the motor which is around 223kws at the motor and then you do the driveline lose its around the 183rwkws mark.. Something like anyways

    blue32zx The answer is 42

have you looked in the tech section?

    http://www.aus300zx.com/tech/buy.html

But power seems a lil low to me...but i could be wrong:)

Mine pulled 179rwkw on safey boost when i first got it with a romtune ecu and kakimoto exhaust.

Then it pulled the same again at 7psi with a rooted clutch at the last dynoday in perth with stock comp, full zorst, coilpacks, fmic, pod:mad:

thanks for your thoughts guys, Yeah I did check out the tech section it helped heaps but I am not that sure about dyno readings. The part about the boost meter being at the right hand side position during acceleration in the buying checklist seemed to check out ok.

Sounds like a sick car. You should see around 200rwkw on a stock car running 14psi. When i first bought my car it made 212rwkw with cat back exhaust, pod filter, and 14psi.

What is the fuel curve like?
Have they mapped boost on the dyno sheet?

    How much are they asking?

Sounds like you need to steer clear.

The dyno sheet didn't have a fuel curve that I could see. Also didn't have boost mapped either. It was serviced regulary by the current owner at UAS, but the dyno reading was done at another place after the rebuild. BTW when I say rebuild it means the head and turbos weres replaced, is this a full rebuild or perhaps just replacing damaged parts? I did ask but the work was done by the previous owner so I don't think the current owner knows.

Now that you mention it, it did have a K&N pod filter and BOVs as well, the asking price is around $15,000 for '91 2 seater. Perhaps I will ask if he minds putting it on a dyno again to get a current dyno reading as the one he has if from a couple of years ago.

    Cheers

    dyno doesnt mean much

i wouldnt go about buying a car(everyday driver) based on dyno readings, you will get a heap more info from uas. ring them ask to speak to someone there and try and find out some history about the car eg. how long it has been coming to them , how often is it brought in, what problems has it had, chances are if the rebuild was of good quality then the poorer dyno reading was from boost leaks or service, you will get alot more useful info from UAS and a compression check.

Dude i am making 191 on 8.5psi with exaust and pod, its sick, for everyone who is about too ask how are you on 8.5 psi i have a boost controller and have not been game to turn it up yet as i do not have an aftermarket boost guage and the car needs a service and 8.5 is just what it came up as on the dyno chart so yeah

If it's a regular at UAS then ask them what they can tell you about the car.

Ask to see the receipts, sometimes they make notes regarding the general condition of the car.

Definately get a comp test and leakdown test, conzult all the rest...

Personally though I think that unless this car has something else that you're really into, you could spend alot of time trying to diagnose this problem that could be better spent looking at other cars.
