Absolutely not - not sure if the tyres could even be stretched to fit. The tyre size should be easy to identify - what tells you they are 17" rims?
I measured them and they were abit larger then 17in, or is that not the correct way of measuring rim sizes?
Doesn't sound right... I don't think 16" tyres could stretch to fit 17" rim. I remember a short while ago there were big enforcements to stop people from trying to stretch 16.5" tyres on 17" rims because there were unstable when you inflate them. But I'm sure 16" onto a 17" can't be done. On the inner side of the rim (around where your balancing weights go) there should be the size. Eg: 16X8, or 17X9.5 etc...

Nope, no way, zip, nadda, no chance...say what? You woulda ripped em to shreddes the first time the wall flexed, or r you just driving slow in a straight line??
Thats what I thought, no way would a 16 tyre fit a 17 rim! But my tyre has R16 and my wheels measure 17+ with a tape measure. I will pull one of the wheels off sometime this week when I have time and check to see if any rim markings. Maybe the measurement from inside the rim is 16? Thanks
My guess is that the 16" is measured where the bead sits ...>> so if the lip is 1/2" higher than the bead, then a 16" wheel would measure 17" from lip to lip.
Whoops - I've moved it here ... (must have hit the wrong button!) A standard Z wheel measures 17ΒΌ" across the front face of the rim, so the 16" measurement is probably the diameter of the wheel at the point where the tyre is mounted; therefore your rims should be 16".
