    g'day,
still tossing up whether or not to go to a single 12" system as opposed to having 2 10" subs.
i don't want heaps of doof doof but still want bass.
would anyone in w.a. be able to give me a demo of what their sound system sounds like?
or even then, people in general tell me what they are running and how it sounds?

the aim is to move to a simple 12" setup, but still have it sounding as good as what i have now.
    cheers.

    go a single 12 mate...

as long as you have a decent sub and a bit of power through it...

there are more factors to it than just the size of the sub... if you want deeper/louder bass, go a single 12" in a ported box. They cream your 10s that you had.

If you want more punch bass, and keep the loudness, go for a sealed box with a bit more power.

Its not bad, goes pretty well, have a 4 channel kicker amp which powers it, i've been in waaaay "bassier" cars, but its good enough for me, if you want a demo lemme know  :)

Go the 2 10" or even one 10". But don't bother buying stuff thats cheap, because you just won't get the bass you want.

It all depends on the type of music you want to listen to and the type of

box you are putting the sub in. If you are just going to put the sub in a ported box and you like up-tempo music then you should go for a 10", but if you are going to be listening to R&B then use a 12. the bigger the sub the deeper it can go and the worse the responce, at least that is the general rule. So if you are a metal fan than technically the 10" subs will be better for your purposeses. However a non-ported box will increase the responce of your sub. I run a 12" sub in a not-ported box and I listen to everything for metal to R&B to the ocasional spurt with initial D eurobeat. My sub is matched to all of these genres due to the fact that the sub is matched to the box and I have a good quality monoblock amp to support it. So basically its not a simple question of do I run a 12 or 2 10's but it depends on a lot of factors. personally I will only ever run a 12 because I know that a good 12 in the right enclosure will do everything I want it to do and take up less space than two 10"s will take. But if I was purely a techno person into only upbeat stuff like happy hard-core than 10's would be the choice I would go for. Maybe if you are more specific with the other perameters than I could previde more assistance...

What kind of music do you listen to; is the box going to be ported or not; and do you need it to be as small as possible?

    one 12 i reckon

i say go the one 12 sub and get a good sub at that. It also depends on the type of box is made. you can slap together a cheap box and get shit bass put together a good box you will get even better base. You make the box to suit the sub.

My box is being made as we speak its almost finished just got to get carpet on it etc and all done. it is also a ported box.

The sub i will be using is a soundsteam USA12 dual voice coil. The amp is a coustic 2 channel amp. I have an amp running the sub and another coustic 2 channel amp running my splits that will be going in the doors (still looking for some good splits)

i can not just plug them in and they will work i have to use a crossover as theses are SPL audio gear. also have a sub level controller so i can set the level the sub without having to go into the hatch to do it.

but yeah it really depends on how much you are willing to spend on your audio setup.

    2 10" subs

i have 2 ten inch pioneer comp subs and with the roof on and the windows up street signs look like they are vibrating. also pushes your hair forward, not much but you can notice it. the subs, amp and install kit cost $700. shop around got subs from cashies.

    sounds like a basic setup

you have scottie_gt. have you ever had it tested? dee what db reading you got?

the stuff i run was in my mates car and made 150db's at easternats last year in the sound off comp. But yeah that was with 2 12's which i have and the amps 4 amps in total and yeah. My mate has spent a shit load on comp gear i was lucky he sold it all to me when he sold his car for way less then he would of sold it to anyone else anyways...

jaybo: how much are you looking at spending on all audio gear for you car? inlcudes wires amps subs etc etc.

    IMO, I liked the 10's,
I had a pair of JBL competition T150's, 15"s both setups IB and in a ported enclosure,
My mates 4x10" MTX's IB, on Pioneer amps had cleaner tighter Bass, no doubt I had deeper rumble but the 10"s were more user friendly and better for all round use,

and as the others said, don't scrimp on quality drivers or on quality amounts of power to control the drivers...

(and my mate with the 10's bought my 15's and I nearly cry every time I hear they are still in boxes in the closet :| )

    something to think about

cheers for the quick replies guys.
at this stage i'm going to pull my current install out, and borrow my mates 12" pioneer sub and put it in the boot for a few days, see if i like it.

the setup i'm looking to have in the boot is:
12" sub - Rockford Fosgate P2 12" (i have the 10" at the moment and am extremely happy with them)

then for the amp a jaycar 4x100. i'll have a channel each for the splits, then bridge the other two for the sub. nice and simple.
the box will be fibreglass etc., will take a bit of time and effort, but its worth taking the time for.
will give it a couple of days to think over and see what i think then.
    cheers.

go a nice dual voice coil 12 inch mate,
i have 1 in my car with a nice beefy amp powering it, and i tell u what its bloody loud, i drive around with it on minimal settings all day because it just pumps out bass unforgivingly. remember u get what u pay 4, go a decent brand like alpine or kicker!!.

also if you are going dual tens i might be killing your boot space a bit more. guess it maters if u have a 2 seater as you wouldnt have any where 2 put the targas!
