Long story short. I did my 100k a few months ago and thought it might be a good idea to check under the cam covers since its been a while just in case there is something wrong. Look what i found:

The inner side of the belt has been been rubbing up against something sharp and has shredded. Its more than likely to be the lower metal cam cover as i had to bend it getting it back in.

And, to top it off, the cam seals look like they're leaking.

... great. :bash: I guess i can be thankful that i've discovered this before any real damage. but still.. rather annoying considering.

i'll probably pull the rest of the pieces off to get a better look so i can get some advice. I'm really starting to regret the whole thing now. I'm just hoping right now the cam seals are OK and the leaking might have stopped. As for the belt. I guess as i've now done it once it wont be such an issue doing it again. Should be quick.

meh. I'm going to bed. I'll post more tomorrow.

I'd say your intuition is very strong

or you have a deep connection with your zed:zlove:

Don't look at it as a problem, look at it as a benefit. You've probably saved yourself an engine rebuild of some description had the belt eventually broke...

Gotta be careful with the lower cover, it slips in the opposite way to what you think. No bending required...

Lip seals are a touchy thing, some I've put in are fine and never leak, while others (like my rear main) leak some of the time :( Did you clean the surface beofre you installed the new seal? Where you careful not to scratch the bore and the shaft while removing the old seal?

    Yep, created your

Own problem by bending the lower cover, as Chrispy says, just have to wiggle them around a bit till it slots into the right place.
Good to have found the problem now rather than later when it all could have turned to Tears.

    the damage looks

About the size of a 10mm bolt used to lock the tensioner down for the service?
The oil leak could also be from the VVT cam gear.
    Its lucky you inspested it.

The slinger behind the crank gear has to be the right way around, or it will also cause that kind of damage.

I thought the one on the back of the crank sprocket was flat and is the same either way, the one on the front had the round edge.

I got both cam covers off today but can't see what the problem. Both cam seals are leaking though..

When i get a bar to get the crank bolt off i should be able to see what's caused the belt problem. I'll probably be able to give an update some time this week.

    Belt problem found

Looks like CBZX was on the mark. I took the lower cover off and found no sign of any rubbing on it although a LOT of scrapings built up inside. It was clear the problem was down low as this is where the build up was. After running my finger underneath the belt i found the problem is a bolt on the waterpump. I've put it in the wrong spot (of all places).

I'm not going to say anymore. I don't see how i could have missed this. Being in the wrong place and all i should have also seen a gap where the bolt to go on top of this would have gone. Anyway. its an easy fix. and no damage done.

As for the leaking cams. I have a feeling this might not be an issue. I had too much oil in the Z earlier and everything was leaking. Thats resolved now so i'm going to leave the seals.

I guess i need a new Gates belt. Any one else have any other recommendations for timing belts?

how did you put the timing covers on with the wrong bolt there ????

If you don't put all the timing over bolts in it will fit fine ;)

The sprocket at the end of the crank drives the belts. The sprocket is made of steel, while the belt is soft.

Does the belt really wear the steel sprocket ?

It is a pain to get off, so does it really need to be replaced ?

    Alfie,

Aren't you the guy that left the lower metal plate off the front crack sprocket? ie, the one that goes between the front seal and the sprocket?

Will be an opportunity to put that part back in place also.

I just had to replace my belt because of a stupid mistake, never tensioned the new pulley to the tensioner assy, came loose and went on angle, belt rubbing on case. Luckiy only a new belt and no damage.
