I have been following the guide from twinturbo.net but i am only replacing the auto-tensioner, timing belt, waterpump and thermostat + a few of the drive belts.

Do i have to remove all the pulleys and losen them all if im not changing them? It says just by losening the auto-tensioner i should be able to remove the belt, but will i have to remove anything or losen anything else to put the new one on?
So would this mean i skip a heap of steps in the faq? Like removing the little covers on the exhaust gears etc? Or do they have to be removed to change the belt?

Last question is, I was thinking of getting all of the 4 big gears chromed. If i remove them whats the best way to remove them without letting them turn? If they do turn how hard is it to turn them back?

    Thanks ;)

    100k service

If you are going to all the trouble of changing the belt etc why not change the idlers while you have it all apart?

No just remove the whole tensioner assembly ...>>

A rattle gun is great for undoing the cam bolts but you still really nead a second person to hold the cam pulley to stop it rotating.

most people say they are good for 200,000+k's and if they

are making no noise then just leave them. The seals etc all look good as well. Most of it doesn't look too old so im guessing maybe it was done before i bought the car??

Also a lot of the stuff has marks on it like RHS, L, R all written in red and white markers which means something was done unless they are like that from the factory? The only real thing which looks old is 2 of the drive belts branded PitWork, they look pretty worn.

Just a few more service questions >>>>>

I have removed the belt and it is a gates belt. Looks to be in OK condition as well. I noticed that every sprocket and cam gear is marked with L and R, dots, etc. Does this mean a service was previously done? Is the Gates belt standard on the nissans?

How much work is involved in removing just the 2 cam gears and replacing them?

Another thing, when i took the fan screw off to put into the auto-tensioner, the screw went all the way in and didn't touch the piston thingy. Was my tensioner dead?

    Thanks again :D

Why do you want to take the cam gears off unless

you want to change the camshaft seals?
I dont think Gates is standard for the Nissan and Im not sure what you mean by the auto tensioner being dead???

The Gates belt has white lines across it which align with the timing marks on the gears an coincides with the number of teeth you are spose to have between the marks (EM-18 in the manual)
I also doubt that with only the auto tensioner removed you will be able to get the belt on. Remove the passengers side idler and its a lot easier.

Double check alignment/orientation of the belts timing marks because its so easy to get it wrong and as you are tensioning it according to the manual you will find it could jump a cog on you without you noticing it
I bought my gear at CBC bearing Co
    timing belt T180BELT.......$52.58
    idler bearing JPU60-145....$87.94
    idler bearing JPU60-144....$79.59

I bought an extra idler (144) and machined it down on a lathe to replace the one on the auto-tensioner:)

hope this is of some benefit to you

    regards John:cool:

Have you removed the auto tensioner yet?....

....you will probably find that once you have removed it the gap will close up, and the bolt will be touching.
