Given how mine is ATM, I don't think you really want me to do yours!

I suspect cleaning fluids/water in the PTU connectors... that will be my first point of attack in the morning. Car cranks strongly, battery shows no sign of flagging, so PTU or CAS seems most likely. Car started and ran well when I moved it off the lawn, but later, just wouldn't fire. We'll see!

I'm not sure why but the quick answer is "no" it's not.

I know what you mean Doug...

Did an oil change yesterday...this morning flat battery - suspect a cactus alternator:( Off to get a multimeter and do the usual.

Better than failing on the way to Coona I guess.

    Check that your seat switches

Don`t stick in the on position,
    Re- flat battery.

    trouble is doug.....

once you get to coona, you'll have to clean it again...:)
Between Melb and Berri in Nov last year, my engine got so filthy and dusty, I had to clean it again before the show and shine..... and lets not even talk about the insects species splattered on the front of my car....

    Cheers

Cleaning at Coona not a problem,

just a quick wipe-over with a cloth. What I got rid of was all the power-steering fluid which had been sprayed all over the bay for the last couple of weeks.
Re: failure to start- went out to the car this morning and it kicked and ran first turn of the key. Bewdy! But tonight, started but was only running on 4, then 5, finally all 6 cylinders. Definately some fluid around the place somewhere. Took it for a long drive to dry things out, hopefully now OK.

check down around your spark plugs

I accidentally wet the motor washing the car once and it collected in the tubes the plugs are in. Could be all dried out now from your drive but if it runs rough again tomorrow, check it out.

    Cheers

The Saga continues. Slowest trip home EVER

on the back of a tilt-tray.
On the way to work late last night, after running around town all evening and she just... died! Was running fine, pulling well, then ... just... nothing! Tried to restart, cranked but no fire. Left her on the side of the road, got a lift to work.
This morning, still the same, so brightened and tightened the PTU connections, still no joy. All the fuses inside and out seem OK. Got it trayed home.

    Any ideas apart from PTU?

What about the relays in the engine bay... how do you tell if they are alright. Will a dead one kill the spark?

Will a faulty CAS give the same symptoms?

Getting a couple of PTU's from Tekky to try tonight.
Learned something, though! Like, how hard is it to get one of these things to go round a bend without the power-steering!

You've checked the CAS already? EDIT: sorry, just read you got it...

running, so I doubt the CAS would be the cause. Like someone else said, maybe your getting water down into the spark plugs?

  17. red32

    red32 You talkin' to me?

Not as such... but I believe the failure rate of a CAS is Very low

If the PTU swap doesn't fix it, I think it's off to Wallards (on the back of a tray, again).
Water on the plugs wouldn't kill all six simultaneously... earlier there was some rough running (see post further up), which sorted itself as the engine got warmer.

    my money ....

is on a dud PTU doug, and I hope its just a case of a simple swap to rule it out....

Do you have datascan... I would be doing an error code check just to make sure everything is fine as far as the sensors go....

What about FPCU?? the funky fuel computer that sits in the rear of the zed... if this dies (which has happened to a few zeds) then the zed just wont start... its a long shot, but one you could pursue if all else fails... give me a call if you have some questions..

    Cheers

    Yeah, me too, Mark!

If one of Graham's PTU's doesn't fix the prob, then I will go down the path of the less likely causes. As for the FPCU, if it dies, does it revive enough to allow the car to start at a later time, and then fail again? Or is it a 'once dead, forever gone' failure?
Unfortunately, I don't have any diagnostic software at all, not even a multi-meter. So if the PTU swaps don't fix the prob, then it's off to the professionals!
Might have to think about going to Coona as a PSA/relief driver!

It is possible Doug for a dead PTU to resurrect itself

once it has cooled down and then die again once hot. Is your PTU still bolted to the timing belt cover or have you relocated it?
