Actually hang on, aren't you thinking of the O2 sensor? The O2 sensor is used to maintain stoich during closed loop.

The det sensor is used to detect detonation (ping) so the ecu can retard timing if/when needed. Are you sure this is restricted to sub 3000rpm?

    Yes...

The O2's will maintain stoich while in closed loop, but as soon as you accelerate hard, you go into open loop and the O2 sensors are no longer used..

The DET sensor is only used by the ECU up until 3000 rpm. After that, it is ignored. I dont know why this is, but I figure that at high rpms the engine is just too noisy for any reliable detonation detection. I dont know. Or perhaps the Nissan engineers believed that if the engine was going to ping, it would ping at lower revs while under load. Who knows.

I have another clue of what my engine does.

When eccelarating maybe a 3rd throttle depression and hold, you sometimes feel flat spots in the power.... Comes and goes with power... What's the problem???

Yep, that's as i understand it

That's interesting, I haven't logged the zed (yet), but on other engines that I have logged the noise most definitely does increase, but not to the point that 'ping' would not stand out regardless. I wonder why they did this?

Just out of interest, what boost are you running under what turbo's?

Cam is running 0 boost & imaginary turbos :p

    It's an NA

Sorry Cam, it's been months since we had a TT versus NA thing happen on the forum, oh how I've missed those bunfights :D

Mate, here's what we'll do if you can wait until until the Goldfields cruise -
At New Gisborne I'll give you my ECUtalk module to plug into your ECU's diagnostic port.
Then you can watch your ignition timing versus varied engine loads over the rest of the cruise and tell us what you see.

I'd almost guarantee that what JEDI77 said will match your observations.
These cars run up to 47* BTDC timing at light throttle settings, a working EGR system was factored into the timing choices.

Every EGR system I've seen so far has been coked up to the point that no inert exhaust gases could possibly be fed into
the combustion chambers to lessen the pinging from the very advanced timing.

Meanwhile it won't damage your engine, TT or NA. As soon as you floor it the pinging goes away, yes?
So it doesn't ping ( detonate ) under serious loads.

You could either clean out or rebuild/replace the EGR system, or delete it and re-tune the ECU ( cheaper and more accurate long term )

Not sure if that made sense ??

Short version, the Ping King will be present on the Goldfields cruise and you can have my ECUtalk module for the day.

    Plan?

Thanks Mick, I have master tuner Dave bringing along some tech stuff on Sunday to run a check of stuff, so ill have to see how that goes and let you know... Thanks Thanks the offer and I may just take you up on that... So are you saying it will log the drive like a racing car and we can then analys the data?

I received my gasket for the plenum, temp sensor and thermostat to put in the car... As I said earlier in the piece, I had to fashion up a gasket for the plenum due to my goods not arriving on time/at all... That was a while ago from rare spares :p not their fault.
Any way, I've noticed a big difference in the fact this gasket has rubber seals on it also... My guess is I could be getting a vac leak around my homemade gasket... Hopfully lol I can't try this out tho until I get the time/more parts to make it worth while

Depending on how badly it leaks a plenum gasket leak could definitely lean out your air/fuel mixture so that's worth a look. See if you can get someone to bring a boost leak tester on sunday.

Does that work on NA aswell? I'm not sure what it looks like or how it works lol but I get the idea of it

Yeah, works on an NA or TT, though on an NA it's probably better called a vacuum leak tester.

It's basically a bung that goes in to the T-piece of the intake instead of the AFM with a plug to attach an air compressor, you basically blow up the intake with air and listen for leaks.

So tonight was a bad night.... The noise was constant in almost all revs, speed and gear.... Can pinging be that constant? Of is it something else? It's a constant metallic rattling around sound.... This time it still continues making the sound for a shirt bit after take my foot off the throttle!

    What tha?!?

  16. WhiteNight

    WhiteNight Littering and...

It is not possible for it to detonate when the throttle has been closed. Unless you have some major vacuum leak inside the throttles?

Doesnt sound like pinging to me.

That's the annoying sound! But I think I still do have pining at times under acceleration (on and off sound).... Soon ill do a plenum pull and have a real good look around, remove egr and clean (I'm keeping it connected)

Have you checked that the spring and carbon piece are in the end of each spark plug to coil socket ?.
    Cheers Dave
