What about driving the fan directly, without a viscous hub? If it was spinning too fast for its mass you could always put a smaller fan on...

I understand, Its pushing alot of air and this is good for the water temp, however the sound is ridiculous. if every zed came out like this from factory, theres not a man in the world who would have bought one. Ive never seen another zed, in real life or in videos, that sounds anything like mine.I had another member of this forum who owns several zeds, come and have a look/listen and he agreed it was over the top. he suggested trimming back the fan shroud, as the air was being pushed into the motor with nowhere to go. I trimmed the fan shroud and instead of a nice quiet zed, it sucked the shroud into the fan and shattered it :( . so now, this is why Im looking at getting another hub and trying that as a last ditch attempt. If that doesnt work, I'll shut up and deal with it.

another member used a hub off a 01 pathfinder, and reported there was no noise whatsoever. maybe because it was s/hand and already run in?

Are you sure your aux fan isn't on full speed as well? that sh*t is noticeably loud too...

yeah its def not the aux fan, thanks for the suggestion though:)

    Thread Dig

I would like to revive this thread because it is coming to the warmer months, and i have decided to go down this rout as well.

My temperatures now, on a cool 15C day, highway speed i sit on 84C. In traffic, stationary for a while and it goes up to 88... i dont like this.Last summer i had a few scares where my temp rose to 95+ when the temp exceeded 35C. On one particular day, remember it hit 42 or something? I literally shit myself when my temps were kissing 105+ (send it to Joe@Dontek for a geeze later and he told me not to fret, all was well.

I have an AMS rad, PlenumPull/WaterBypass, 100K done, the only kink in the chain HAS to be the Viscous Clutch Fan.
So, next week i will be going to see Bryan, for a new one. However, i will not be getting a stock OEM one, Bryan rebuilds and strengthens them, (so i have been told), apparently much better for boosted Z's...

I will monitor my temps along the way to Geelong from Melbourne, and do the same on the way back, ensuring long Freeway runs, and City traffic, to get a pretty dead on accurate comparison. Maybe, if it is successful, the forum can organise a group service at Brytech's, get ready for summer, and help out a fellow forum member, and a bloody good one too.

    Regards,
    Elie

Do you run a complete rad shroud? Upper and lower?

Yes Mike i do. New alloy front lower air guide, but not the top aftermarket one...

just checking the obvious - You religiously change your coolant once a year and have power flushed your cooling system

never heard of modded clutch fans, sounds interesting. id love 2 see some pics of whata your bloke does 2 beef them up..

top air guide helps.. i had a 2 to 4degree drop in temps, and engine bay was alot cooler !!! mine vents directly to the underbonnet rather then2 the air filters :D

I've just bought a second Zed, and the clutch fan in it is almost siezed, ie VERY stiff. It makes the car very noisy indeed, especially on gear changes - I wouldn't want to drive a Zed which was that noisy. I've replaced it with a second hand unit that feels much more like the clutch fan on my other Zed, which has no overheating issues. I'm yet to drive it again, but I'm hoping it's a lot quieter and runs as cool.

Also, in reading through the posts, there seems to be a bit of confusion either on my part or some others as to what clutch fans are supposed to do at highway speeds. It's my understanding that at highway speeds, there is absolutely no need for an engine fan as the air flow through the radiator due to the car's speed is more than enough to cool the engine. Hypothetically, if a car is only driven at highway speeds, it would run better and cooler without any fans attached to the engine or radiator at all, as this would decrease the restrictions to airflow through the radiator. Obviously, that's not practical in a real world situation, so clutches on fans are designed to 'slip' at higher vehicle speeds to reduce noise, and reduce drag on the engine. At lower vehicle and higher engine speeds that you have when driving in traffic (where you need a fan for cooling), the clutch stiffens up and drives the fan harder. If this is the case, then a comparison at highway speeds would be misleading, and in any case, I would have thought that at highway speeds with relatively low engine outputs, the coolant temperature should be entirely controlled by the thermostat, not by the fan speed.

    What are other people's opinions?

In the old days you were able to buy a repair kit if the bore was OK to replace the seal & to refill with silican fluid in the fan clutch units which fixed most of the OEM fan clutch units like new for only a few dollars what a rip-off are the new ones THESE DAYS THEY CALL IT "PROGRESS".

Interesting... Sounds correct, however, at speed the air hitting (in mine and many others case) the front mount intercooler makes it hard to reach and go through the radiator. For me, noise is not a factor when faced with hot temperatures... Even if the fan is not running furiously, as long as it is spinning, it sucks that air that is smacking the fmic or radiator through. I'm sure then, that is what Bryan's 'rebuild' is, using a different viscous oil in the clutch that allows the fan to spin faster at high vehicle speeds that the OEM fan...

Can anyone else shed some light on this? Perhaps Bryan himself?

I have found a lot of the zed clutch fans are not working properly, meaning by not stiffening up at all, We then drilled them and have found all the ones being faulty have next to no oil or none at all,

These are refilled with a different type of oil making them stiffen up quicker at lower temps to keep the temp down.

This is not like locking them shut the noise is only a touch more than stock none of the customers have complained or even noticed the noise being louder, but all have said their temps run lower.. These temps have been monitored before and after with aftermarket gauges and or ECU Talk.

I do not say this will fix your cooling problems cause many different parameters of the zed cooling system can cause over heating problems but if the clutch fan is the fault its a great fix and upgrade in one..

I had a 93tt giving me cooling problems tried everything first. Repaired and upgraded clutch fan FIXED then removed radiator shrouds and still perfect temps,

    Cheers Bryan

URHYNS, for me, that's the big issue with front mounts. The Zed has a pretty poor air intake to the radiator at the best of times, with the A/C condensor and elec fan and several brackets in the way of the airflow. The radiator I reckon is way too small as well. Then if you fit a front mount intercooler, which basically preheats the air to the radiator, what you end up with is a situation that when the engine is putting out big horsepower, not only is it relying on the front mount to cool the intake charge more, but it also has to rely on the radiator more to cool the engine down. I'm not against front mounts, but I wouldn't fit one myself. Fans also cause their own issues. Yes, they do pump or suck air through, but they do it by 'twisting' the air. That's OK for a rear mount fan like the clutch fan, but not so good for the aux cooling/A/C fan at the front. It ends up pushing air sideways into the radiator and A/C condensor, which have 'straight through' vents. It's also centrally mounted, whereas the hot spot in the radiator is near the inlet pipe. Does it suck air away from the hot spot of the radiator?

There's probably a few things that can be done with front mounts though. It wouldn't be too hard to monitor the temerature of the front mount intercooler itself, then switch on the aux fan if needed, or if too hot, limit the boost, and/or fire up a warning light.

Brytech, have you ever come across a siezed or stiff fan clutch? The one I pulled out of Z2 wasn't new, but it was very stiff - way too stiff, I think.

Yes I have had only 1 customer come in to the shop, he was wondering what the loud noise was in his engine bay. It was not siezed but very hard to turn and sounded like a chopper in the engine bay lol... I dont know what causes them to do it either, car had not overheated as far as i could tell ???

From what i have seen the fluid inside turns to paste which locks them up ?. Why it does this i have know idea but maybe from excessive heat in the engine bay ?

What about the ebay ones from N Power which is cheaper than the OEM ones? Anyone used it before? Is it worth buying them?

    Cheers
