Problems with ABS....

Having problems with the ABS in the zed where at low speeds and under very light braking i'm having the ABS come on, this is sometimes without the light coming up on the dash... eventually after awhile thou the light will turn on and stay on which i am pretty sure leaves the ABS off until the car is stopped and started again.

other symptoms are the constant chime sound of the abs whilst braking... Have had Joe down at Dontex to have a look but they were unable to get any error codes from the ABS and no problems driving it around (this being my luck).

my zed is a 1990 Aus-spec Na if that helps at all.

    cheers,
    Johni :zlove:

    Tyre size/wheel size?

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that not having the same rolling diameter as stock can cause issues with the ABS system.

the brake fluid was changed and topped up recently.... and i've had the same set of wheels on the car when the abs was working just fine...

few months back i had the RHS wheel speed sensor replaced for a new one from nissan (yeah i know cost an arm and a leg ) it fixed the issue for awhile... so one would think that it is the problem this time around but its been checked thoroughly with no faults....

The ABS speed sensors are NOT registering your roadspeed. They register whether a wheel is slowing down too quickly(compared to the other wheels)and is likely to lock/skid/lose traction(at which point, it will release and re-apply the brakes on the offending wheel so that traction is maintained).

How do you know that the ABS is "coming on"?
What is this "chime" you are referring to?

the chime i hear is the same one as when u have just started the zed and have started moving....and with the abs coming on i can feel the brakes re applying on the brake pedal as u would when the abs normally would come on under heavy braking....

I don't have any such chime in any of my Zeds or any I have been in - except in reverse of course. Is that what you mean?

well yea but i have it whilst moving forwards as well it comes on once i've started and have moved the z forwards or backwards just higher then idle speed.... its been like that even when the abs was working just fine....

when that same sound or chime comes on is when the problem occurs :(

booked into another brake specialist tomorrow morning see how it goes

I have NEVER seen a Z32 with a chime at low speed(forward or backward). Sounds like some aftermarket gizmo to me(used to be very popular in the Philippines about 25 years ago).

mine has also started having similar issues recently & is also a '90 aus-spec.
I have no 'chime' that you speak off (in forward or reverse) but it sounds very similar to your problem, when travelling at very low speeds the abs will go off.

example, not 30min ago I got home, brakes had been fine the entire drive but as i roll to a stop in the driveway (so slow the speedo's reading zero) the abs fires. I know its the abs because the light comes on & I can feel the brake peddle go nuts under my foot. Can also hear stuff going on from the abs setup in the boot.

has got brake fluid & wheels & tyres have been on for a couple years. I also spent ages back when I got them making sure the rolling diameter would match up.

So anyone know? Is it as simple as cleaning the abs sensors at each wheel or more complicated/expensive than that?

    cheers, tim

The ABS light should only come on if it's throwing an error, never seen one come on otherwise

Get a Non-ABS system and be a maddd dawwg.

z32's also came out with no ABS.
might be worth downgrading if its giving you too much of a headache.

Have any of you guys serviced the ABS Control Unit in the rear of the car(it should be checked and bled periodically)? Check the solenoids are functioning while you're there.

Is this something I can try myself chili, is there a tech article or something you could point me towards?
Or is this a job for the pros...

It's a normal part of doing a Brake Fluid flush and bleed on an ABS fitted vehicle(and the procedure is shown in the W'shop Manual). There are bleed nipples on the ABS Unit as well as on the individual Brake Calipers.:zlove:

hey chili .. correct me if I am wrong but if you flush your entire brake system and put new brake fluid in you dont need to bleed the ABS unit just all 4 calipers as it runs through the whole sytem?

If doing a complete power-flush, you shouldn't need to bleed the ABS Unit separately(but if you experience operating problems, it would be prudent to go over the entire system).
