Hey All, I've had a problem that has plagued me since when I first got the zed 18 months ago. Under normal driving conditions she seems to run relatively hot compared to the other zeds I've seen. At night with 24 degree (indicated) ambient temps it will climb to 80 degrees within a few minutes and hold flat for around 5 minutes, maybe jumping up and down a few degrees but in general it will sit at around 80. After 5 minutes of being at 80 degrees it'll slowly start to rise and sit at around 85-86. On a hot day I've seen it get to around 95. It seems to be worst when going above say 70km/h. Driving along the highway at 100km/h its normal to see it running at around 90 degrees. Everyone else I speak to says without the AC on and mild-medium boosting they rarely go beyond 85 which is my goal. Another thing that has been happening for a while now is when you take the cap off after driving around for a while there is a small amount of foam/sludge near the cap. It is only ever a tiny amount. I've had a head gasket leak test done a while ago which came up negative. There is also no signs of coolant in the oil. I've done the following to try to help the cooling system: - 100k service (new water pump/thermostat) - 40mm aluminum radiator from JustJap - Silicon radiator hoses from JustJap - Installed an electric thermo-fan - Removed said electric thermo-fan - Re-installed radiator shrouds and under-car guards. - Cleaned out the AC condenser - Installed an air guide from CazRacing - Changed the coolant a bunch of times to facilitate the above work. I've done all I can think of so far, I've even gone out and bought a Gonzo nose panel with big vents in it to get some cold air into the rad which I've not had time to paint and fit. The main points people need to know about the car is: - Has a stock front bar - Has a HKS style FMIC - Temps have been read directly from the ECU with an ECU Talk unit. - Relatively stock motor (AIV removed, Stock Turbos with Tune Agent dumps) - Temps go up as the speed does even when under low-load. - Chipped ECU Its got to the point where I find myself not wanting to drive the car now. I can't boost too hard or the temps will go up, I can't use the AC because the temps will get to near 100 degrees, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has time I'd really appreciate if anyone wants to come take a look and perhaps give me some pointers on where to go from here.
How hot is the day when she gets to 95 degrees? I don't see the temps you've mentioned being that unusual based on my own zed's performance. Today it was 34 degrees and mine sat on 93 degrees at 110 km/hr (no a/c). It dropped to 91 at slower speeds. As a general rule she sits at about 60 degrees above ambient temp once fully warmed up.
I alleviated my high speed temp issues by raising the back of the bonnet with washers and removing the weather stripping on the driver's cowl.
I agree, if anything ur temps are prob alittle on the hot side not much. Is ur rad a twinpass? 40mm is very small , most ppl upgrade to the 56 mm . Trev
Is the clutch fan properly engaging? Otherwise I'd guess a slow leak from one of the under plenum hoses..
kimo sabe ... it would appear that Mr FMIC strikes again ..... search will reveal heaps of threads/posts directed at this somewhat complex FMIC/Heating issue ....
stop blaming FMIC's for heating issues... 1 his temps arent all that high really 2 how many people are running FMIC without any isues at all 3 he is runnign a piss ant small radiator, probably the main issue he has,
..and just as many with issues ... as i said, a complex issue worth revisiting via the search facility ... heaps of potential complicating factors ... TGFNAs ..... and our old mate ... Dilligaf ...
Have you done a plennum pull and hose bypass? If not you may have a small leak in one of those hoses... Doesn't have to be big enough to leak significant amount of coolant, just big enough to loose pressure. Were the problems there with the stock radiator? HKS is like the least obstructive FMIC design but it is still something extra in front of the radiator. A vented grill could help.
It was around 36 degrees ambient. She hit 104 degrees when I joined in the cruise to Gympie a couple of months ago too. Although we were doing around 120km/h the whole way. I was considering doing the same thing. How high did you raise yours? I was thinking 4-5 washers should bring it up about 1cm. Unfortunately she is just a "triple core" 40mm. I was thinking I could also try one of the PWR 56mm twin-pass rads if nothing else solves the problem. From what I can tell it does. I haven't done the ruler test however Eric said it is engaging fine. It defiantly gets stiffer as the temp goes up. No UDP installed, belts all seem fine. Not as yet. I have purchased all the parts but haven't had the money to get them fitted. I think I might need to host a tech day. I changed to an electric fan which brought the temps up and I tried to solve that problem by installing a larger radiator which of course wasn't successful so I swapped back after the 100k service.
I originally used 4 but then it looked rather stupid with the bonnet sitting so far above the guards... I ended up using 2 washers and combined with removing the cowl seal there's plenty of room there for airflow.
I don't have any heat problems and Thats on a 40+ day, and I have a FMIC and 17psi boost and temp never moves, giving it shit, burnouts at the drags and racing,
Exactly If everything else is set up properly front mounts wont be a problem, mines a track regular running 20lb boost with a large front mount and i don't have any overheating probs.
Have you had an engine cooling system power flush done? The stock system does NOT overheat. I'd go back to basics. Heres what I'd check: 1)I'd try another clutch fan assembly. I have one here you can borrow to try. 2) lower rad hose sucking in? 3) cooling system power flush. I have a tech article on cooling system (a to z of overheating) to look at also.
