Hey guys...I've been fairly quiet about the project as it kinda grinded to a financial halt, but over the last month I've been putting in some evening hours on the motor and was rewarded with some sweet surprises and some not so sweet. but I'd thought I'd give you all an update and a few pics to keep the dream alive. Still hope to make the physical transition of at least an NA V12 into the zed over the XMAS break, but hopefully the TT will be coming to COWRA next easter. OK...so the motor, 1990 M70 5.0L V12 out of the 750iL sedan. Purchased from a wrecker with box, computer and loom (don't want the box...but need the loom and ecu's). Now I didn't really know what condition the motor was in, I was hopeful, being a shortstroke, auto boxed motor (ie low reving) that it was going to be in good nik, but as with anything, it depended on the maintenance. The donor vehicle had done over 250,000km's, but hey...BMW engineers right So started pulling it all apart and noticed a-lot of crap build up and evidence of a few major oil leaks around the timing covers. These motors are chain driven so the whole thing is practically emersed in oil. So now I know at least one thing...the oil hasn't been changed in the last 50,000km's if at ALL!!! :bash: :bash: Anyway, pull all that off, take the cam covers off and nothing nice to see in here at all.... Yep...snapped head bolt. As you can probably see, they use torque to yeild bolts, so some retard...never mind....heads are coming off....you can also see the wear to the cams from that photo...new or reground, I'll decide later. Another interesting notion is all the CTS, tempguage and coolant pressure sensors are all at the *back* of the engine...which is just great...so I'll need to make a solid hose from a radiator to the water pump and mount them there, seeing as I'm not going to be able to access the back of the motor once it's in the chassis. NEXT...heads off, ahhhh...a pleasant surprise, Bores are immaculate...god these alloy blocks are coated in something tough, perfect. Tell me all you VG rebuilders if you've seen bores like this on a 200,000km + VG30 motor?!?! and here's the evil bolt... and here's it coming out.... wonderfull.... Heres the block...ahhhh you say...so pretty... Now on it's end...these blocks are easy to throw around...light as a feather... Now another sweet surprise...look at these bearings!!!! tell me all you VG rebuilders...seen bearing like these on a 200,000km+ VG30?!?! nuh-aahhh!!! Ok...thats pretty much where I'm at...waiting on set of rods and pistons before she gets put back together with the heads bored out, polished and stiffer springs and reground (i just decided) cams. Oh and custom flywheel and bellhousing adaptor to mate it to the zed box...look at this flywheel...weighs almost as much as the block!!!! :bash: :bash:
Good to see it progressing slowly but surely. I REALLY hope it's ready for Cowra, even without those silly turbos The alloy blocks have a silicone carbide coating on them, once it's worn you have to toss the block, it's the same with the Porsche 928's. I must say those bearings are very nice, specially after 250,000k's
Interesting project, generally prefer Jap engineering myself though. Any modern low stress motor will do those K's, easy, TT is hardly low stress.
Oh I agree, but the fact that there are obvious signs of poor maintenance...but the bottom end and cylinder walls are in perfect condition kinda makes me feel better about.............increasing it's stress levels.
Hell yeah! now thats what im talking about, like others very interested to see the progress of this one
Nice Work This indeed will be an interesting project... so you say it could be road worthy by Christmas? What kind of power figures are you hoping to achieve and are you going with v10dett? should be great to hear! I have seen rb26dett's in z32's but never a v101 better plant the money trees and buy some fertiliser good luck wilo
awesome man, been waitin for ages to see some progress pics from ya. good to see that your progressing along, that thing is gunna sound like a monster when you done man, will be fun as hell thats for sure.
And here I was thinking TopSecret in Japan were great for stuffing a V12 into a Supra... and then AndyMac from Sydney comes along and decides to fit V12TT into the Zed... Simply Awesome mate. Good luck with it all
I think Toyota were experimenting a bit and put a few V12's into Soarers in the nineties. Have Nissan ever built any V12's ?
End result will be twin turbo...or maybe quad, depending on room and how eager I am to finish. There are 2 exhaust manifolds per bank in stock form so If I utilise that and go for 2 T25 turbo's per bank, or just use the 2 GT38R's I have out back  . As for power figures...I'm not sure what I will achieve...the bottom end will be solid as a rock, and handle anywhere up to 1000rwhp, but the heads are quite low tech and not sure what they'll flow. Plus I don't want to start snapping gearboxes with the amount of torque that will be punching out. So realistically...I'm going for 650-700rwhp... I always had a dream of having a car which match the Mclaren F1 625hp per tonne mark...so 975hp would be the ultimate goal.
Here's a Skyline with a 6.7l Merc V12, 4 turbos and 1000hp. 0-60mph in 3 sec. http://www.theskylinesunderground.hostingzero.com/news/v12skyline/
wrong my friend ,you can clearly see 6 cylinders on each side, its a jag v12 engine block lol, want some proof ????? http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/journojulz/julz.html
