Decided it was finally time to replace my long overdue Timing Belt and Idler Pulleys. All was proceeding satisfactorily UNTIL...I discovered that my Belt Tensioner is NOT hydraulic, nor does it have the 'threaded hole' that is shown in the FSM(and is required for fitment of the temporary locking bolt). After trying a 'Search' on here, I have drawn a blank. My Z is an 89/90 build TT 2+2 man. Does anyone here have some answers in this regard?
not sure if this is any help to you.. http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?135139-Align-timing-belt&highlight=timing you might have to register..
Thanks for your reply MM, however, that procedure clearly shows the hex-head bolt(locking the Tensioner)that needs to be removed at the end of the belt fitment. THAT is precisely the problem that I have encountered, there is NO bolt/bolt hole evident on my engine at that location(and no where to install that temporary bolt).
The small boss that the bolt goes into is probably broken off, pretty common if whoever fitted it wasn't careful.
I think you've 'hit the nail on the head'(Wizard mentioned that also). Closer inspection(after cleaning the area thoroughly)seems to support that probability. Thanks guys!!!
Anybody got some clever solutions to how I can safely remove/replace my current belt(given the above issue)? "G" clamp, large Vice-grips???
You can get after market tensioners a bit cheaper. A few people have posted they have broken them over the years. It usually happens if you try and tighten the bolt to fast without giving the hydraulic piston time too adjust. A few turns then wait a couple of minutes is the best way. Cheers Dave
Easiest way is to wrap a decent size zip tie around it if you are reusing it, otherwise just undo the bolts and pull it off
Worked like a dream, TeeJay. I wacked a heavy-duty zip tie around it, pulled it out and checked that it was working properly, reset it to 4mm and refitted it, also replaced all of the belt idler pulleys with new items. Made up some gadgets to "lock" the Camshaft Gears to each other(so they didn't/couldn't rotate)and replaced the Toothed Belt with a new Gates item(followed by removal of the zip tie). All back together and working perfectly. Thanks for the input.:zlove::br:
I was bugger arseing around with a timing belt on a V6 DOHC sorrento motor and saw a trick on the internet with a bolt, 2 washers and a nut. You put the bolt in between the cam gears and the washers in between the teeth, the nut it so stop the lower washer falling off. Not applicable to your original query, just remembered it when you said you made a "gadget up".
Unlike you, I didn't see a 'trick' on the Internet(but I DID make -up a couple of clamps to do the same job).:zlove: They worked perfectly, and saved a lot of potential agro, which is now being diverted to the fact that one of my new fan-belts is around 10-15mm too short(Power Steering Pump). It's no fun being a perennial victim!
I just lost my admiration for your seemingly endless knowledge Mike(since when is it plausible to shorten a belt that is already too short)? P.S. I really like your solution of "stapling it back together", what sized staples would you suggest?:zlove:
haha my bad, I missed the short bit, assumed long (always assume long!) Since it is too short, may I suggest really big staples? Might give you the length you desire
Yep there is no other reason than simply being tight around the pucker hole! Next time, be skimpy on buying the bikini's for your missus and do the proper service schedule on the Z ! :zlove:
