Probably just rooted. Try a replacement.

Plug in good nick? Not full of corrosion?

yes the plug is ok I will go out and give it a clean and a spray and try again. Can the afm just shit itself just like that?

Yeah, they are outlined in the service manual. You can find it in the tech section.

The filament is probably damaged if the connectors are fine. This would mean a replacement.

However, just as a small test before you spend the cash on a new AFM. Get another mate with a ZX with a working AFM and quickly swap them over. If this solves the problem then it is obviously your AFM. (the symptoms indicate the AFM anyway but it is always good to be sure if you really want to test it).

SOMETIMES using MAF/AFM cleaner can solve the problem as the filaments CAN get dirty from time to time but more often than not its the actual filament that has failed.

I dont know of any way to repair the filament. I think a replacement is mandatory in that scenario.

    Peace :)

Pull the cover off the AFM connector....

with it still connected to the AFM, count from the left to terminal No.5 (looking from the rear of the connector) and use a multimeter to test for 12V with the ignition switch turned ON. Also test terminal No.2 for 0.8V, then start the car and at warm idle terminal No.2 should read 0.8-1.5V.

Generally not enough to cause failure like that i.e. 2500rpm rev cut.

    Yeah

But just a thought . I'd bet the same as every one else tho and say the AFM could be stuffed.

Thanks all, I have put a multi-meter on it and get 12v going in on one pin ,another reads .2v another.1 and another 0 . the car runs the same when it is pluged in or not therfore saying it has no effect on the way it is working and with the 12v going in i would think that the afm is no good. I do not know of any one else to borrow one off so I will have to buy one to give it a go...John

Shop around for AFMs off other Nissan cars

This may save you some big $$$.

My memory fails me but I *think* a Maxima AFM of similar age suits. BUT check this first with part number comparisons. Someone else may be able to confirm. Suggest you buy 2nd hand unless you are flush with cash (Link to CZP @ $400US).

    AFMs are usually pretty dependable.
