lol noooo Auto is faster... (here comes the flaming) And i'm painting the gearbox red so it will be faster again
Wrong Wrong Simmo The Std auto under increased horse power will slip and flare during gear changes. This wears out the clutch-packs and bands. By eliminating the slipping you increase the lifespan between rebuilds, not decrease it.
the thing is jamie your right, in a straight line, the auto is faster!....in a auto its impossible to stall, slip the clutch, miss a gearshift and a properly set up auto can change gears quicker than a manual while loosing less boost, BUT....its when you put a corner or 2 in the road that a manual, with the ability to select any gear at will that the manual car gets the advantage.....and thats also what you will be attempting to emulate with one of the "shift at will" style electronic gearshift control units!:zlove:
ive never had a problem with that??? ive done alot of twisty runs and i havnt really complained.... if u know how to drive with the auto then its fine, and im not talking just leaving it in d and off u go, that obviously would be the worst on corners with the auto wanting to change its gears automatically eeekkk.... eg. hold button on (keeps it in selected gear), auto in d, punch it, hit the cnr manually shift back down into 2nd, exit corner and when ready to change into 3rd manually shift back into d, still hold button activated will pretty much changed into 3rd straight away when manually shifted into d, punch it thru 3rd if needing 4th hit the overdrive button, and then hit the cnr and repeat p.s i aint saying the auto is better, the manual will ALWAYS be better for full controlability... but the auto aint that far behind, plus with a shift kit and a stally u prob wouldnt bother changing had alotta fun in it
Not to ninja the thread toooo much but would a conversion from a manual to a auto with the shift at will style kit be much more expencive then auto to auto with shift at will? Sorry Chilledpain dont mean to steal thread but while we are all on the topic
HELL YEAH Best damn money I ever spent on my ZX, out shifts anything else, solid and dependable without the 'Human factor" ever being an issue. I can drive mine as hard if not harder than a manual without the need to drop a hand from the wheel unless I want to manually drop down more than whats "normaly required" buy the computer. Put the shift kit in and drive rings around all the old skool "manual only" girls Oh..... I live on the Great Ocean road so if ever there was a "heaven" for manuals that would cerytainly be it...... personally I havent seen too many manuals "keeping up" My best advice..... RESEARCH there are "kits" & there are kits as I found out..... mine was built by a drag racing specialist mate as a big favor & my instructions were ' I want to be able to select 1st gear at 100kph'....... I've never tried it but I recon it would  Ultimately ..... a S.A.W. kit would be the ducks nuts coupled up with my auto setup Sadly the $$$$$ are required elsewhere at the moment. Cost of the final product ~$1600 look on ppls faces when they realise its an auto thats just "out driven" them...... priceless Kingy
Willis ....................... What you talkingabout boy One thing I forgot..... You'll need one of these .... http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-ALUMINUM...ries?hash=item563486613c&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
lool U know... From Different Strokes... Arnold "What u talkin bout Willis" lol never mind... I'm half cut at the moment!
not trying to say one is better than the other chad, each transmission has its pros and cons, and realistically, the difference between the 2 types is 1% here,2% there if you know what i mean....i prefer manuals, but thats just me, i can certainly see how a auto is preferable in some ways........
That's very intertesting I was always under the impression yours was manual!! What turbo's do you run, and if bigger how do you find lag with the gear ratio's of the Auto's? I'm auto and was thinking about going to an NA diff/subframe to cut the gearing down a touch for better acceleration. Did you consider Manual valve body?
Shifting down/engine braking in an auto is bad for the torque converter. Autos have their place though, at the strip.
Your not the first......... and wont be the last eiter Never had std turbos on it when I bought it.... and I've "upsized" since then lag ?????? read on ..... N/A diff installed over 2 years ago, ( aong with many other "power related" mods ) axles were also modified at the time so I could run rims with a backspace of +48mm, this inturn allowed me to run much larger rubber on the existing rims 275 ~ 295 wide rubber clears on 9" rims yes..... But before I explain you have to know I am a 4x4 driver and a mod on Aust's biggest 4x4 forum ...... what I've learnt from that translates into the 300zx in one particular area...... The auto gearbox ! Perhaps something that few people know is the fact that the 300ZX shares its auto gearbox with the Nissan Patrol....... The Nissan Patrol is one of the strongest 4x4 competition trucks around and many of them run autos ( infact its proabably more like 70% are autos today !! ) Most competitors have a "lockup" switch installed which effectiviley locks the auto in the desired gear which the driver has manually selected via the shifter, this makes the auto a manualised gearbox without all the associated problems of an actual manual..... water in the clutch = slipping dust & other contaminates = shortened clutch life overheated or slipping clutch broken clutch line / cable fractured pressureplates these and many other issues face competition rigs and as a result manuals seem to have become dinosours .... the humble clutch just isnt up to the riggors of offroading events By fitting a lockup switch and a modded valve body, one has the best that an auto can offer in the 4x4 competition scene... this also translates nicely to the 300ZX Shyte..... I'm giveing away my secrets........ now you'll just have to figure out the rest yourself .... bed time Kingy

Yay for self promotion... When i hear words like "extreme" and "extra special" all used in the same context, that is just a recipe for pure awesomeness! lol
yup personally i would prefer a manual. but having owned an auto doesnt really bother me, esp when u have things like stally's and shift kits that make the auto's pretty kool is this lockup switch the same as the "hold" switch we have already ?
