Just wondering if there are any experienced painters who can offer tips.

I plan on spraying some calipers red and then using a stencil to spray white letters on. I probably won't be doing a clear coat and will just polish up the red and giving it a wet sand. Clear doesn't stick very well on red and apparently the clear on red factory evo brembos start peeling once you a get a few track day heat cycles into them.

Paint in question is VHT caliper paint for both red and white colours.

    Few questions...

    1. Can you spray white over red? I've read somewhere that you actually shouldn't spray white on red because the red will bleed into the white and I should use a high temp vinyl decal instead for the lettering.

    2. Anyone tried VHT flameproof? It's engine enamel with more heat tolerance, should I use this instead? Higher heat rating which is great but not sure if it will cure properly on calipers. I'm not oven baking them.

I have used the VHT Paint specifically for brakes

I have used the VHT Paint specifically for brakes and have not had any issues with it. Provided the preparation is good you should not have any issues with the paint sticking okay or peeling off. If these is any dust dirt or grease on the calipers then it will peel off for sure.

I cannot comment on the White over Red issue but i would suspect that if you let the Red paint cure properly it would not bleed once 100% dry. May mean waiting 24 hours before applying you white stencil but hey if you want a good job then wait.

    Cheers Tim:)

sounds good fat mike. i'll be there between 2-4PM, is that cool?

tim prepping and waiting for the red to cure won't be an issue. they are off the car and i can take my time with them. i'd like a definite yes or no on the colour bleeding though, what happens when they heat up etc etc.

still wanting an answer on the flameproof as i've cooked my caliper paint once. hard mountain run, got pulled over by police and then left waiting for 30 mins. brake fluid boiled and the red VHT caliper paint turned brown.

You cure the paint by heating it or it will dull and peel

Im not sure what the dramas is with red
Ive got the brakes on LOWZX done with hi temp caliper paint(BLACK),sanded the "nissan",then hi temp caliper clear over the top, cured by heating them up and never had a drama for 2 years :)

I have even painted the slots ,rotor hats and outside edge of the rotor with no problems there either
They still look exactly the same as the day i did them and you know yourself how hot my brakes get :eek:

The trick is not using gloss as the colour, use satin or flat then clear gloss

gloss over gloss wont last !!!

Read it again mate, I'm asking about red bleeding into white and flameproof. Not about those things...

Clearcoats do not stick to red like they do on other colours. If u googled u'll see that even factory red paint evo brembos peel. That's not the issue here anyway as I already said I probably won't bother with clear.

I also don't have a problem with curing nor the paint I used. You should remember since I stopped by at your place after my caliper paint got cooked. Got pulled over in the middle of a hard run, forced to sit there for 30 mins and heat from the rotors fed back into the calipers, ruined the paint + boiled the fluid and left me without brakes when I was finally let go. In case this happens again, hopefully not... I want paint that will stand up to even more punishment. Hence flameproof which is fine up to 900C where as the VHT caliper paint only handles up to 480C or so. Since I've never used it and the curing process for this stuff requires hot/cold cyles @ engine temps, I'm wondering if the heat generated from just hard braking cycles will be enough.

These for your Brembo's? I painted mine with high temp caliper paint then got Brembo stickers from the US on ebay. Never had any hassles and I've cooked them before

    I've used

vht paints on many parts, inculding callipers plenum block ect, the only problem I have had, was if the surface to be sprayed was not spotlessly clean, or I ignored the DON"T use under coat warning, the under coat fails and screws the the lot. Use VHT high temp calliper paint, it lasts as long as you follow the rules.

ive used high temp/ flame proof and caliper paint

only thing to worry about with all of these is when painting one over the top of the other you must only recoat 2 ways.. while paint is still tacky (withing 30 mins or so) or once fully cured

if you paint white over red within the 30 mins it will turn the white pink as the red bleeds though as it cures (thinners evaporate from paint bringing small amount of colour with them)

if you dont fully cure the reed before applying the while the white will fall off as soon as you heat the rotors up

so.. read the can, set your oven up and heat cure the calipers to the required temp for the required time before painting the white.. and scuff up the glossy red finish over the nissan with 400 grit sandpaper before painting them white

if you do not heat cure high temp paints they wont cure at all
