Hi all. I was givin a skyline a bit of a drag tonight and all went well the first time, but the second round after i've hit the red lines in 1st and changed into 2nd the car started missing like a cylinder wasn't firing. After about 10secs it was running fine again, but by then the skyline flogged me. It's not the first time the car has done it, but very rarely as it's had a bigger hiding than that before with no probs. Anybody have any ideas what might be causing that? Car is a 90tt manual. Cheers. Josh.

probably PTU but could also be a injector or coilpack plug.

    Aye

I think its the coilpack mine was doing exactly that. Got new clips etc for the coil pack connecters and all fixed.

i had that happen to me once it was one of my injector plugs, mine had the clip broken off of it.

All of the suggestions regrarding PTU and Coilpacks, etc are valid, but kinda looking for the worst possible solution first...

The symptom you described is common in cars that run rich at the top end and/or have incorrectly gapped plugs or atmo BOVs. You drown the plug when you close the throttle as your still dumping fuel into the chambers, but with no air. Whats your economy like? And do you get a significant amount of soot/black smoke out the back when you open it up? My suggestion would be to get on a dyno and check your AFR's. Check one of your plugs as well, they'll have a fair amount of carbon buildup if your running too rich.

i had iridium plugs and this used to happen all the time same with my mates skyline we both changed to copper plugs gapped them to the correct spec and been fine ever since

I think car is running too rich as I can smell it sometimes on a cold start and I only get about 300k to a tank around town, but my heavy foot wouldn't be helpin. I've never noticed black smoke out the back but there's always plenty of soot buildup on the pipes. I've actually noticed some white smoke when taking off with a cold engine but this is rare too, do you think it's a related problem? Car just has stocko plumb back BOV's and i've changed the plugs to iridium ones a couple of months back, but done it myself and have probably gapped them wrong. I'll take one out and have a look and get to a dyno, i'd really like to get down there where the mechanics know something about these cars as the ones up here don't want to even look at em. Cheers. Josh

Ok, never gap iridium or platinum's, buy them with the correct gap to start with otherwise you'll bugger them.

Iridium's are a lot more prone to fowling then coppers, and if your getting circa 300km/tank around town, even with a heavy foot, that can definitely cause it. Exact symptoms i had, 300k's/tank and iridium. Sort out your rich issue, and that will cure your problem.

I started to have a miss after a spirited drive down the back streets....and It turned out to be a loose coilpack plug (a spot of superglue on it) and its been right since Aug last year. I believe coil pack plugs have a tendancy to come loose, not completely off... just loose enough to cause a missing type effect. Although, don't quote me

    Could be worth a look?
