My car won't let me shift the auto lever, simply can't push the release button in. Unless i press the unlock button as well then the car will run in all gears but in hold position.

I'm assuming this is a auto safety feature where it is holding on the revs and gears so the transmission won't bugger up if there's a problem.

I'll do a transmission service because it's due, but is there any specific cause for this?

I can't fully understand what the problem is.

You're saying it won't let you take it out of park? Is that the only problem? Whats "hold position"? Turn it off.

The safety solenoid at the shifter might be faulty. Can take them out or if you have kids who like to play with things then get it replaced.

also, 2 screws at the front side of the shifter, take them out and as you slide the shifter handle off the shaft, the release button and spring will pop out. Just check that there's no obstructions and give it a bit of a grease.

The little lock thing behind the shifter, if you push that down and push the button in it will change, but without the lock it won't.

The car drives when you change the gears with the lock but it doesn't drive peoperly, it hold back as if the hold switch is turned on. No matter what setting it's on if you put your foot down it does about 0-100 in 15 seconds.

It has all gears still, so I just assume its a factory presett that if there is a problem with the transmition the car detects it and won't let you drive the car hard untill the problems fixed

So you do have 2 problems. Auto's change themselves, not you and maybe get the controller checked out as it might be stuck in a form of hold mode.

This ones beyond me sorry.

The gear lock bends if forced

Just pull it to bits and straighten the pin ,Also fix or reposition the switches in there at the same time and it will work correctly.:zlove:

When i say change gears i meant it will only 'slide' if you like into N P D 1 and 2.
But only if the lock is in.

Will this solve the issue of it being restricted? In hold for example? Your saying to pull the shifter apart?

Because if i shift it into say drive with the lock in, it doesn't give me the option of using Power, A/T and hold. It just drives like it's always in hold. but maybe even more restricted.

So it will freely move and not have a firm lock between each selection? Other then that, the auto works as it should when in drive? I know that one. Happened to me once. "My shifter went limp" thread. ;)

Except mine completely failed. There is a roller and cam type configuration on the box itself.

    EDIT: Found it.

Had a read, how much did it cost for it to be fixed if you don't mind me asking?

I do every now and then have the problem (i mean it's only happened twice but) of the drive not selecting any gears, but when you select either 2nd or 1st manually it will drive fine, just not past second.

It seams to be doing that now. I try not to touch the gear box its a bit out of my league of mechanical knowledge.

Mine was repaired under warrenty because I had it rebuild and it failed 2 days after.
Best just to get it looked at and quoted. You will lose the car for a day or so depending on how busy they are. They'll need to get it out and pull it apart to have a look before they can quote.

probably just as easy/ expensive to get the whole thing rebuilt. Would only be a couple of hundred extra

Does anyone know how many litres of fluid the transmition of an Auto N/A is?

2500 for a rebuild. Would be good value in that. I'm not sure how much fluid the auto holds. As far as I know, until the dipstick says it's full lol. :p

Was just a bloody fuse! All mine are in japanese so I didn't know what it was for, changed it and was right again.

Serviced the transmition, the fluid was a dark brown abnd the gasget turned to pretty much metal. had to grind it off and replace with another cork.

Don't know the previous owner but I wish people would look after their cars!

Good result. How much fluid did you end up getting in there. When mine was done, 9.5 litres was needed

Just what was in the sump and the dip-stick said it was full. Bought 5L and only used 4L. Most of it must have been still in the transmition etc. I'll have to do another change in the next 5000km because it has mixed with the old stuff.

It was a 10 amp fuse. It was the second or third last on the bottom row on the right hand side (Closest to door)

Yeah, I had a small hole drilled into the torque converter to get out every last bit :)

Click here and print it out. Stick it in your fuse box.

    Thanks.

I have another problem, the fuse keeps blowing. What is connected to it that would cause it to?
