    Hey everyone,
Finally starting my project on the zed..
This week Craig and I will be installing my Stillen kit (which I bought 1 year ago)..yes it's finally happening!!!

Would be really grateful if some people could give me some tips and keep an eye on the thread to help me through this tough time *looks at BADZX and 571CKY*...

First things first..What air compressor should I get and what size nozzle? I've read things about 2.5hp being the better kind..
We will be spraying it in Acrylic, and being a 2 seater zed how much paint am I looking at? Like primer, clear etc??

Also for all you backyard job guys..how did you spray the zed? In the garage, booth? And did you take all the panels off the car or just stick the kit on and prep?

And lastly for now..what are the main essentials I'll be needing to pull this off..I'm not looking for showroom quality, but I will be sanding and prepping the zed myself and don't worry I will be taking my time, as prep work is the key..

This is what we will be installing this week:

hate to be the one to say it, but i think paint work should be left to the pro's.

yeah best of luck with it :), not trying to be mean but i just think that a zed deserves a good paint job in 2 pak.

From my 'backyard experiences', we don't have a garage nor a booth either, just a decent sized backyard & car port.

Basically I just use a good ol' sturdy 4 legged stand of some sort & lay the bumpers, wings etc. carefully on there & do all the prep work & painting on it (when the weather is nice).

That's my way of doing it, & I am more than happy with the results (if only
I could get the right color one of these days)

Hope this helps in some way.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Yeah if it doesn't turn out very good Renee will most likely get it done pro, we may yet do it in a proper booth, possibly by a pro for cheap as I've got some mates in the right business ;)

We aren't revealing the new colour yet..you'll find out soon enough once some progress pics go up ;)

    Cheers!

saw a cheap fold up carport/tent thing the other day somewhere...might have been one of the hardware stores or auto stores? But anyway might be worth a look, lest a whole bunch of dust, bugs and leaves spatters onto the zed while wet

    matty-Z zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

when my uncle and i were doing my boot recently, we..

    - sanding it back with a orbital sander
    - rubbed it back with a grey scourer
    - air sprayed all the dust off
    - primed it
    - rubbed it back again with the scourer gently so get out any scratch marks
    - air sprayed all the dust off
    - wiped over it with some wax and grease remover or thinner to remove and oil spots or anything like that
    - painted it

takes a long time and you need to go slow, not sure what compressor or gun we had, but i know it was a big compressor like the ones at a painting place.

if your using any filler of any sort make sure you mix it well other wise you get air bubbles so then when u sand it back you will have to fill again and it just gets annoying

im just going off my own experience, if anyone can add to that then you should be heading in the right direction.

i dont think you are being mean, just being truthful :)

The very thing you should not do on a budget is painting ,its the most important thing on a car
But all the best with the revamp anyway ren

  11. BADZX

    BADZX Grumpy old fart

    we be watchin :)
& I'm only a phonecall & a couple of hours away if you get stuck !

Depends on if its a full respray or just sections of the car..... but ....
A 10CFM compresser should be fine in either case.

I assume you mean the spray gun's nozzle -> 1.4 is a good allrounder tip for both priming and color/clear coating.

Volume of paint will depend on the area to be covered.... 3 lits of color will easily do a full car and kit. If its just a kit then 1 lit will do.

Did mine in the shed !!!!
Front clip, headlight panel, & rear wing off the car.
Skirts and rear valance on the car.

Dust is the killer when DIY ..... Its the dust from the bog work and priming prep work that gets disturbed during the color stage and forks the job up. Tarp EVERYTHING up in the shed ( sheets / bed spreads from StVinnies are ideal and cheap ) for all stages of the process..... DONT RE USE THE 'TARPS"..... change em on each step of the process.
1 set for the bog work
    1 set for the priming
    1 set for the color.

    TIP:
Wet the shed floor down just before you spray so its nice and damp ( this traps and holds the dust you've missed like on the air line .... mutter mutter mutter )

Dust tarps, you can never have enough !
sanding block, long board ( bog work), finishing block, gravity fed spray gun, elcheapo orbital sander for large areas ( bonnet etc), ..... Good clear space in the shed for paint mixing etc, clear work area ( nothing worse than falling ass over when puting that last coat on )

    biggest tip :

ASK FOR HELP..... before it goes bad !

    :D

    Thanks for your reply Kingy..
It's gonna be a full respray..We have had some experience with prep work, as we painted Craig's old R31, and now we know prep is the key..

That's a good idea bedspreads from the Op shop..would have never thought of that..was trying to think of places where I could get large sheets of plastic lol...now what do you mean by "finishing block"..

So far I've got the following:
    - Sikaflex
    - 4L of thinners
    - Body filler
    - 150 and 600 grade sandpaper

and I've got a lot more stuff to buy ;)..gonna spend today reading up on threads about painting and prep and making a list of what I need to buy..

  13. red32

    red32 You talkin' to me?

DON'T use plastic sheets... static electricity catches then repels the dust!
Use the (cotton/woollen) bedspreads/sheets, and wet them down before you start so they trap any dust!

Best of 'British' to you both!

As others have said dust is gonna be your biggest problem, id suggest try to get access to a spray booth or garage at least. Water can also cause problems too. I recently helped to finnish painting a 60+ft boat semi-outdoors and dust and water can be real headaches. Make sure you get GOOD equipment and dont forget to ask questions if you are unsure.

RedZedMikey RZM should now be DZM

Best of luck Renee, I guess yours will be done before mine. Don't know if you are aware, but I have the exact same combination of Stillen body kit pieces lined up for RZ2. Colour change ... please tell me yours won't be Holden Flame Red :p:p:p, can't have someone else with the same body kit and colour!

Don't worry I'll be asking plenty of questions..yeah well our garage might be the place to do it, if Craig can't get a loan of this spray booth..

Don't worry Mikey I'm not painting mine Holden Flame Red..you can relax lol..

Well looks like the GMC 2.5hp air compressor is sounding good from Bunnings..Can someone please give me an idea how much thinners, paint, clear, primer etc I will need to buy - for a full respray?

What brand of paint are you using?

    hey mate,

2.5 hp compressor is good size - less than 2 and they stall to build up more pressure - so yeah thats the size you want

get a good spray gun - either hire one, borrow or spend more than $150 / 200 (entry level price to provide good finish). i think my gun was about that price from supercheap, and when my spraypainter mate used it, he said it was excellent buying, as good as the ones he used at work. a lousy gun will make the paint run through uneven spray, etc.

def use an enclosed area to do it like a garage, you wont be able to get a reasonable finish outdoors, cause of the dust, just like the other guys said. even still, when doing it indoors, we would wet the ground to stop dust moving around onto the panel, which really helped.

get a good plastic primer to do your bumpers, skirts, etc, and do several coats. ive cheated this previously on a job, and had the primer progressively chip off after about 18 months.

im pretty sure (but you would want to research these yourself) the paper we were using was:-
    400 dry before primer
approx 700 wet/dry between primer paint coats
between 1500 - 2000 wet/dry after final coat followed by a medim cut with a buff machine (be careful with these things - using them on angles will take off all your colour)

nice and light with the paint gun so you dont get runs - heavy paint will create runs. lots (min 5 for panels, more for bumpers and skirts) of light coats of colour.

its been 7 or so years since my last effort, so double check the info ive given you, but i was almost always happy with the finish.

if you research well, and are patient, you should be able to get a really good finish. best of luck!

2000 is a waste of time, thats for detailers who are too afraid to use 1500.

After final coat use 1200 to get it flat, then 1500 to remove the marks from the 12.

Hey renzed you do know that acrylic paint is not impervious to fuel like 2k is? fuel, thinners and some wheel cleaners will lift it off
