i gotta 300zx overheating, removed thermostat still overheating and blowing hoses , I have checked water pump physically it seems ok (it turns no play, No rust) there seems to be no bubbles coming out of radiator so head may be ok no oil or ater mixing either, What the hell is wrong with it the hoses get so much pressure in them after driving for only 15 mins, any reccomendations will be appreciated please. Also I dont have the right radiator cap on it someone said this does not allow the right pressure or something why is it overheating so bad, what can it be =(

    1/
    Get another thermostat.......
The pump may be pumping the water through the system so fast is has too little time in the radiator to cool.

    2/
    The right radiator cap .......
Ever wondered why NISSAN would spend thousands of hours designing a system so others can fit parts that shouldnt be there and then queery why they dont work on a system that their not designed for ???
    FIT THE CORRECT CAP

    3/
    Overheating causes......

    a/ see 1/ & 2/

b/ poor airflow to the radiator - externaly blocked
( full of dead bugs etc)

c/ poor water flow in the radiator- internaly blocked cores - remove end tanks rod cores and flush

    d/water pump-
    A/broken drive belt
B/Damaged or corroded impeller, impeller shaft & or bearings

e/ bottom radiator hose colapsing- suction can force the hose to colapse thus blocking off the water flow
( this effect increases dramatically when the thermostat is removed from the system)

f/Air locks..... Zed's are notorious for getting airlocks in the cooling system, search the tech section for the best proceedure on re-filling the coolant system
(basically park it nose up on a bloody steep hill to refill the coolant)

    g/ Coolant loss via......
A/ blown gasket- can be an internal or external leak
B/ blown..... radiator hose / heater core hose / or one of the many other hoses
    C/ corroded welsh plugs
    D/ damaged/corroded radiator
    E/ damaged/corroded heater core
F/ damaged / corroded water pump housing or bearings

h/ cooling fans.... ZX's have 2 fans, an off engine clutch fan & an electric thermo fan
1/ the engine clutch fan can fail in 2 ways, either the blade assembly ( rare) or the actual clutch section ( common), you should be able to physically restrain the blades movement with the engine running at idle and with RPM increased to around 4000rpm, after a few minutes of run time the clutch should be easilly able to overpower your restraint of the blades.
2/ electrical thermo fans rarely fail.... search the tech section for the testing proccedure & posiable re-wireing so the fan is 'manually' controled not ECU controlled. The thermo fan setup on the ZX is a secondary cooling aid and should cut in at a pre designated temp setting, again search the tech sections.

Get the correct cap, about $5 from Repco. Jack the front of the car up and fill slowly with coolant. See what happenes then. If no luck go and see UAS or MRC.

    :sorry:
after re-reading that bit I better add......

I have tough old manual workers hands and I'm physically quite fit so I dont have an issue in a hands on approach when restraining the blades with my hands.

Other limp wristed pen pushing prissy boys however may require a packet or four of band-aids should they attempt it.

So with the engine OFF make and fit a "leash" from electrial tape with which to restrain the blades

    ;)

    re heat problems

hey guys thanks for the suggestions, Things i have tried

    1 checked water pump
    2 checked radiator flow
3 checked hoses for inlet out blockages
4 checked thermo fan on engine

I think what Im trying to say is will not having the right radiator cap cause all this heating to blow hoses? also how will I know if my water pumps faulty without removing everything?

Depends by what you mean by the wrong cap. If you have some sort of ridiculous 3 bar one then it will cause dramas. Buy the right one already

Advice as provided should suffice ...

    ... it's sound!

    1. Air in the system will allow water (or coolant) to turn to steam and the water pump cavitates, thus overheating.

    2. The mech fan must be up to the job of pulling sufficient air through the rad to cool.

Radiator cap sounds like its old and worn i changed mine yesterday 0.9 bar which was recomended but if you got a 1.2bar get another one soon as and try that

  9. tassuperkart

tassuperkart Its a lie I tell you!

NO! The incorrect cap will simply alter the relief pressure of the radiator and raise or lower the boiling point of the coolant a certain amount.
In your case , not that much!

Ahhhhhhhh welll overheating .......... after everything else is ruled out!!!!!!
    Way it is M8

    Re: overheating

hey guys my cap says on it 0.9 bar and as mentioned above someone has used the same so I dont think this is the issue, Is there a way for to test the water pump? I am constantly blowing hoses and its ridiculous is it coz there just old brittle or is there too much pressure in the system causing this ? I am driving it around still but topping up water every 15 minutes especially with this heat, The mechanic wants $250 to replace the hose coz its so hard to get to, I dont wanna replace the hose only for the pressure to build up again and do the job twice if you guys get what I mean. I think I need to take it to a good mechanice any reccomendations???????? thanks for all the suggestions Hopefully I get it going properly soon

    Hi
Yeah replace cap first to original
then we can talk more if needed
    cheers

Hoses are hard to get to, and once they are old and one goes, they all start to go. Change them all at once.

  15. BADZX

    BADZX Grumpy old fart

That hose is as weak as the rest of them ...
    REPLACE EM ALL

    Let me see ....
$250 to do a basic fix and keep the car on the road through the early part of summer
( the key word here is ....... SUMMER, you remember summer .... its when things get HOTTER ! )

    Verus

A blown motor.... & the costs will be 20 times that of the mechanics price to change the pharked hose.... + your car off the road for a few months...
isnt summer the best time to cruise in a sports car

You own a performance sports car....... :zlove:

Sadly low performance maintainance will not "play well" with it

    As Chrispy said......
Hoses are hard to get to, and once they are old and one goes, they all start to go. Change them all at once

Just incase ya missed it ;)

Hoses are hard to get to, and once they are old and one goes, they all start to go. Change them all at once

Your choice..... but common sence tells me $250 is a cheap maintance cost at the stage your at !

    Re: overheating

hey i think you guys missed the question here, What I meant was is it the hoses that stuffed or is it that too much pressure is building up causing them to blow, No use replacing all new hoses if there only gonna blow again . if u get me

Have to confess a wry smile reading posts like this, us N/A owners that you TT guys bag all the time can drive around quite happily in summer with no over heating issues caused by a pair of red hot snails under the bonnet :) (flame suit on).
