Screech at startup - Starter Motor

I'm getting a really loud screech at startup, it is def. the starter motor (not a fan belt etc.). I guess this means it's on its last legs....

My question is, could this have damaged any teeth anywhere, or is it more likely to just be the internals of the starter itself ?
If I order a starter and put it on is it likely to fix the problem ?

I will have a look at removing it over the weekend and have a look, just want to know what I might be up for !

    Thanks,

    Matt.

    Benny_C About as subtle as...

    Just have it

reconditioned. maybe up to $150 for reco. Lots cheaper than ordering a new one. easy (slightly fiddly) job to unbolt, take in for reco, then bolt back on.

Check the terminals to the starter, if the unit isn't getting enough current this can cause the symptoms you describe because it's not engaging properly.

Other than that you can try to remove it and lube it up a bit and give it a visual inspection. I've never had a starter motor fail on me ever, the most I've had to do is just take it off and clean it up and it worked like new.

The bottom start motor bolt is probably stripped out causing it to be bit loose.

This is pretty common, The gearbox will need to have the thread recoiled to fix it.

    Mine does the same thing.
I've been through all the mentioned fixes but unfortunantly mine has turned out to be the teeth on the flywheel are worn.
So it's gearbox out time sometime in the future when I get sick of embarrasing myself at the shops and servo etc lol.

But then you think about upgrading everything else like clutch etc since you already got the gearbox out......it never ends. ;)

a screech is obviously a fanbelt problem,if its zinging (spinning over),id be going with what wrecktrader says

Finally got around to looking at the starter motor !

Tektrader was right, the bottom bolt was stripped...

Luckily a friend had the correct size Helicoil kit (10mm x 1.5) so recoiled it today (lots of room under there and at a nice angle so very quick and easy) and it's all back on like new... :zlove:

    Still got a noise...

I put it all back together and started it over the weekend, I'm still getting a noise from the starter motor while it's cranking... :( It now releases fine but while it's cranking it sounds like this:

Any idea what it is ? It sounds to me like it's not quite engaging properly, could this be an alignment thing ?

Also in this picture it looks like the teeth of the flywheel are slightly worn on the left hand edge, could it be that it's only engaging on this little part ?

    Cheers,

    Matt.
