has anyone gotten ECUTalk for windows mobile to work on an i-mate PDA phone? i've done a bit of searching but to no avail.
It doesn't have a serial port, but instead a mini USB port on the PDA. I've tried plugging my conzult cable into it and running ECUTalk but it doesn't connect.

Any experiences, or tricks to get it to work?

If the only port on the phone is a mini-usb it will not work. From the ECUTalk website:

I'm in the same boat with my HP rw6828, but have a seperate h5550 just for the car. I had hoped I'd be able to make it work but no :( Pity there wasn't a bluetooth conzult connector (hint to developers!!! ;))

i got feedback by someone who tried using a bluetooth/serial converter (ie, it sends bluetooth from the serial consult cable to ur pda) but only had limited success, definitely far from as good as a plain cable

turns out far cheaper to buy another "proper" cheaper ipaq than to get all the hardware/converters/crap needed to get a non-serial enabled pda to work

    Makes sense.

Thought as much, by the time you go out and get the adapters/cables/etc. it would overtake just getting a basic ipaq with the serial port.

Thanks for the feedback guys. :zlove:

    Bluetooth ?

Have these PDAs got Bluetooth ?

I might have a solution if they do, I currently have a PDA running with the ECU over bluetooth, I've got a bluetooth to serial dongle connected to the consult port via a consult cable then connect the PDA to that over bluetooth...

It works really well, you can walk around the car with it (under the bonnet to adjust TPS for example), the dongles were also pretty cheap, I think under $100. I ordered the dongle a while ago (about 18 months) but can look at pricing/sourcing some more if there is some interest...

    Cheers,

    Matt.

does it work reliably? ive had a few people let me know about attempts with serial/bluetooth adaptors but none reported reliable operation (one had issues with working at all, and the other would only work sometimes, eg wouldnt show detect all sensors, etc).

what brand/model etc is it, where'd you buy it from etc?

because now that most pda's etc are moving towards no serial connectivity, there isnt much ability to connect newer pda's/pocket pc smartphones to the ecu

Yeah, let me know. I'd be super-interested in this.

yes indeed. Details would be much appreciated. I've been looking for something like this for my 838 Pro for a while now

thats interesting. more info on what parts you have, models etc. i currently run a serial pda for ecu diagnostics but wouldnt mind upgrading to that since you can walk around the car with it...

All the info on the AIRcable bluetooth to serial adapter...

    Ok,

My Z has been off the road for the last 6 months :( Just got it all going again the other day, so I'd forgotten exactly what I used etc.

Just looked it all up, I'm using these AIRcable converters:

    http://www.aircable.net/serial.html

I'm actually using a previous version as I got it last year but it is essentially the same, it has DIP switches to set the baud rate and hardware handshaking and you can configure it with some special commands through the serial port. If I recall I also modified the consult cable to provide power to one of the DB9 pins to power it, you can run 12v straight in so no messing about with power adapters/cables etc.

Here are a couple of pics of it in the car, chucked in the rear foot well for now :p

I was using it with both a Dell Axim PDA (in a box somewhere at the moment as we've just moved house) and my laptop. I used it for a while before my car was off the road and it worked fairly reliably, I was going to do more tests but from what I remember on my drive home from work, (about 1/2 hour) it didn't have any problems after it connected. I'll find my PDA again this weekend and try and do some more tests in the coming week.

I've also got a spare AIRcable that I could probably lend out if someone wants to try it for themselves for reliability or with different PDA's etc.

I think at the time I e-mailed the company about volume discounts for the modules as well, so there may be a possibility of a group buy to reduce the cost.

thanks...wonder if the aircable mini would work, since its cheaper at $49

though $79 is cheaper than most ive seen

btw, blazt cables have pin9 12v on their newer serial consult interfaces, and the older cables can be modified fairly easily to be able to support higher current on the pin9

Yeah it should do, I was looking at getting the mini but wanted to try this one first as it has the DIP switches which were easier to set up while trying it out... Although the mini is out of stock at the moment :(

Yeah I think I just connected 12v to pin 9

I also ordered the SMD version and was also looking at making a board up with that and the other consult circuitry in there so it would just plug into the port and wouldn't require the consult cable, would be fairly easy to do.

    Tested !

I tested this solution down to Canberra a few weeks a ago and it work fine, so about 3 hours and no problems. I would say this is the one to get, easy to set up and good reliability.

    Cheers,

    Matt.

    Epic dig!

Ok, so I finally got around to buying one of these (Serial5x) cables.

Good news: It works fantastically on my old PDA running Pocket PC 2003. Gave it a 90 minute run trial tonight, both walking around the car while it was idling and driving 100kms. Worked perfectly!

Bad news: It doesn't work yet on my Windows Mobile 6.1 phone. Either I'm doing something wrong, or the Bluetooth stack in WM6.1 does not support the device. But I'll keep playing around...

sounds like the status quo of bluetooth. it works or it doesnt.

Yeah, but the thing is it finds the device, but just won't connect properly. The aircable web site specifically mentions support for WinCE but no later mobile windows OS. hmm. Is it possible / viable to put another bluetooth stack onto a wm6.1 device? There is also a wm6.5 upgrade for my device - should I try this?

no idea really, ive had 0% success with any bluetooth with consult. usually ud assume the new wm6.5 would be 'better' in some way.
