Over Heating and Engine Cut out???

    I'll cut the story short. N/A VG30DE Z32

I was driving along, radiator full at start of drive. About 70km down the road, out of nowhere the engine stopped. I lost power then the motor just cut out. I wasnt aware of any problems and the temp guage was reading fine.

I had no warning lights on the dash to warn me and the engine temp guage stayed in the normal temp range. Yet but there was clearly no water and the engine was very very hot. I'm confused and pissed that the guage may be faulty or something?

I opened the bonnet and the radiator cap had blown off and there was no water at all.

Does the car computer have a safety mechanism where if the car gets dangerously hot the engine stops???

The engine won't start but it is turning over and I can smell fuel. Is the computer not letting the coils fire?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Nathan :(

dont try and start it untill you have coolent back in the radiator....dont try and turn it over....there is a chance that the cap has faild (lol after reading that it blew off) buy a new one for about 30 bucks and after topping your coolent back up try and see how she goes from there. the stock temp gauge sucks. and it the radiator cap blew off it means you would have lost your coolent in a very short time, so no time for the temp gauge to respond

dont drive the car back home, unless you are already at home with the car. get it towed

    thats bad....really bad....

you may just had a major overheat, and theres a good chance that heads may have warped, head gaskets blown and all the usuals.....:(

i personally would take the car home, drop and replace the oil, change plugs(may have melted during overheat),refill the radiator and give it another go......

the stock temp gauges are notorious for being late to respond to overheating,by the time it raises you have basicly cooked ther motor already..:bash:

on the other hand a replacemnet na motor can be had cheapish.....

good luck......hope it ends well for you...

What are PTU connectors/pins??? What is their function? Where abouts would I find these?

The oil smells like its been burnt. There is no oil in the radiator and there is no water in the oil, which is leading me to believe that the head gasket and heads might still be alright.

I'll check and replace the plugs if they look damaged! What should I look out for when checking to see if the plugs are destroyed?

Many thanks to you all for your help and ideas!

If your cap has blown off, then it is possible that the neck of the radiator may be worn. The neck of the radiator has small lugs on it that the cap grips onto. Since it is plastic, and the cap is metal, the cap will wear these down over time.

I had similar happen to me 2 months after I bought the car, except for me, only one side of the cap blew off.

I had no problems with gaskets or heads from that incident.

dude, invest in a temp gauge!

I think the first thing you should do with a Z is get a temp gauge installed, and I'm sure you can fine one where the coolant goes past say 95*C it will flash or do something to get your attention

good luck and i hope your heads are ok

    Bad news

Sounds to me like your motors got too hot. Rings have lost their tension, compression is way down and thats why it doesn't want to start.
From experience  I'd say youll need a complete rebuild or 2nd hand motor. Sorry for being the bearer of bad news.
Hope its not as bad as I think

Afraid I tend to agree, when a car stops because it got too hot it can't be good :( I've had mine over heat a couple of times, always got to it quick though and haven't had any issues at all. Dodgy radiators and caps
