Hey guys, Did an install of a headunit in the z and for some reason my dash lights aren't working anymore... I thought i did the wiring properly... obviously not To be more specific of the problem, when i go to turn the lights on, the dash lights (instrument lights) don't turn on, and the high beam light comes on even though im not on high beams (yeh i have checked ). So what i've done is taken the stereo right out, disconnected my wiring and i still have the problem... I've checked the headlamp fuses and they look fine.... Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Matt
i would say you have taken what looks to be a negative when the lights are not on but is actually an illumination power cable that was not active, had the same problem in my lancer one tail light and the interior lights went because of it
get the nissan colour codes and match it accordingly. lol made me laugh. umm best way to prevent this happening, when removing the headunit next time. instead of cutting all the wires off at once. slowly do it 1 by 1 then cutting the old dongle free. leaves less room for error . but i'm pretty sure 300zx setup has two bundles of wires, rear speakers on 1 lot and on the other are fronts, power, ignition, remote antenna.. on the other.. so follow it back. and see where you went wrong?.. *shrug* but my wires behind my head unit look non fact and professionally done before i got to it teeheheheh
Then why when i disconnect the stereo wiring is the problem still apparent? If i was sending the circuit to ground it should be corrected with the removal of the stereo?
I made my own harness to connect to the factory So all wires are still there... the colour codes don't exactly match the ones in the tech article... For example i don't have 2 red and black wires... plus i have a thick black wire that is grounded to the chasis that used to connect to the top of the old factory unit completely disconnected...
Just an update... I've completely unwired what i've done (so its all just what you'd have factory if you took that fascia off) and i'm still having the same problem... Are there any fuses im missing? or wires that im missing somewhere? hot300zx - The lights on the roof are working, (the one that activates on the door and the ones activated by switch)... ALSO, fog lights aren't working.... but brake lights, reverse lights are.. Thanks for the help guys!
Sounds like a fuse bud, i got a tomei hicas lock on my 31 and when i blow this certain fuse it actvates my hicas lol. So double check all blade fuses mate cuz at 1st glance they can be decieving.
re dash lights hey man on nissan cars the earth lead has to be hooked up to the chasis as nissan dont normaly use a earth in the wiring, some people have hooked the earth wire up thinking it is a earth as of using a multi meter they see the lights power as a earth,therfore when the stereo earth is hooked to it it opperates as normal cause when the lights are off it is to ground.but soon as you turn the lights on it diverts back to 12 volts and blows your fuses. if you have checked the fuses and they seem ok they maybe dry jointed from being hooked up wrong,yes i know you said you had taken the stero out and still have problem but in saying that when you started getting this problem it tends to make you not think as well as you want and there maybe a wire still shorting out.so check the illumination wire again to make sure it is not shorting out or you have hooked it up to a earth..... let me know how you go man.
I had exactly the same problem when I put in my head unit, and in my case Timelord is right about the earthing...I connected the earth of the head unit to what I thought was a ground in the dash, when I turned the car on, the stereo works and all, but as soon as I turned my headlights on...well they don't come on, and only high beams work. Blew a few fuses before figuring out what the problem was. In the end I just ran a new earth wire to another location...works perfectly now.
Hey guys, you were right, i blew a fuse by running the ground to the illumination wire hahaha stupid mistake, but easy to make i guess. So for anyone having the same problem, check your fuses! (My hazard light fuse went... go figure?) Also i'd like to point out that the wiring article in the tech section wasn't quite right. Blue was the accessories wire (supposed to be red), Also the green and red (i think it was red) is the illumination wire, maybe good idea to tell people not to use that as ground Thanks!
