Converting TT into NA z32

    Hi there fellow zedders,
Basically I need to remove the turbos off my TT z32.
There are two reasons for this:
    1) I'l be on my P's soon and turbos are not allowed (I just turned 18)
    2) I believe the turbos require a rebuild (engine oil in the intercooler lines), and i currently do not have the funds to do so.
If your thinking its a waste of time and i should just sell the car- i am unable to unless i sell it without RWC and loose my 1 years worth of rego, therefore it is not an option.

My questions are: What would the power output be like? (Relating it to other cars). Also as the head gasket needs replacement (i just removed the plenum today), if i were to replace the current TT heads with NA heads would this increase compression? If i were to machine the heads, how far would i be able to go while allowing sufficient clearance between the valves and pistons? And would this bring it to around NA compression?

After i am off my P's I will re-install the turbos.

    Cheers marlon

Next time have a search, has been covered by other people in the same predicament.

    Power will be rubbish.

NA and TT heads are practically the same (except for some small changes in the ports). CR is determined by the pistons, not the heads.

Sell the car, or change the motor. It's the only way. I'll be selling my NA motor soon, 135rwkw

easiest thing would be change engines, but this still would not be ideal :). up to you dude depends how much u like the car, i would try and sell it or just drive it. either way ur gonna get screwed:eek: but i do have an 95 aus spec na engine with all conversion parts for real cheap and im in victoria ;) just need new head gasket

I'm a naturally aspirated 300zx owner and I'm very happy with my car (Sometimes  ), although I've never driven a TT I would imagine that going from twin-turbos to no turbos would really suck. I don't know how you would feel but I'd be really disappointed.

On the upside you have something to look forward to in a few years, if you convert the car back and you get to drive your Z. Plus you'll get to know your car better and have less of a chance driving it into a poll. You could always move to western australia.

    Why did you buy it?

Thanks for the help everybody, i really do appreciate it. Thanks Chrispy, I think i will change the motor to an NA, or if possible just the block. Hey 300zx Lover, what were you thinking of selling it for? I live in Dandenong.
Hey there WA300z yeah, im a little dissapointed but i had a sense of what was to come when i bought it. I've only been able to drive the car on my L's so havnt had much to miss out on. I bought the car because it was going pretty cheap especially for the amount of Km's its got (40,000).

    cheers marlon

dude i would sell the works for a grand. thats the lot, manifolds, ecu, and watever else u need. im doing a tt conversion so i dun need it. be perfect for you. engines out you can do a head gasket yourself. ask around you wont get a better deal

a grand sounds good but i just have that type of cash on me.
Does anyone know if my current engine will be fine if i just replace the pistons with NA ones?

dude your looking at alot of parts. like pistons, ecu, manifold, radiator and brackets, hoses for radiator and so on. not just a matter of engine wise

Hey im on my P's and I own a twin turbo zed and the only time you get pulled over is if your being a nob or if your got your sterio at like 600db only 1 Copper asked if I was allowed to drive it and I just told him that it was just under the P\W ratio and nothing more was asked

how long you been on your p's for?

yeah before i got my zed, after being on my p's for around 9 months, i nearly got a TT. This was also before i knew much about cars. Back then i thought it's be fairly easy to just take the turbos off etc :p , but no it's very involved. I'd say 300zx lovers offer is quite good if you want to keep your current car. Easier and less expensive than changing the pistons etc, then buying a tt ecu, exhaust manifolds, injectors, etc etc. Just remember: either way you're gonna have to pay to get your engine out (unless you're able to do it yourself) and that's about 1200-2000 in itself depending on where you go.

So 1000 for a complete engine and everything needed to convert, plus maybe 1500 for labor, then add another grand for anything else that may need fixing (there always tends to be something). So you're looking at 3 to 3 and a half grand roughly, maybe more, maybe less. I'd say sell your car and buy a nice NA, it's a lot easier and cheaper in the end.

Ive had my P's for about Year and a half and I bought the car just before I was 18, I think you should keep your car as I said before Ive had no problems but that might be because I dont live in Melb not sure but if you are going to go a NA it maybe cheaper and a lot less problems to sell it:zlove:

If you pull all the turbo stickers off and don't have BOV's or intercoolers hanging off the front you might get away with it. I wouldn't take the chance.

It is probably easier to convert a TT to NA than the other way around, but not much.

    You'll need:

    NA engine
    NA ECU
NA front pipes (not completely sure about this, they could be the same)
NA flywheel and clutch, and machine the bellhousing so the starter works

If you can't do it yourself, it will definately not be worth the money. Just sell the car and buy a NA.

    18 and driving a TT

Just keep in mind, if you do decide to the drive the TT on your P's, and you end up in a crash, your insurance will be invalid.

You should talk with your insurance company and make sure they will accept the TT car is getting a N.A engine in it.

you dont have to machine any bellhousing:)

Sorry, your right. If you keep the TT flywheel you'll be right. If you change to a NA one then you will have to machine it.

no u wont, u just put washers behind the starter motor:)

... if you are going from a NA gearbox to a TT flywheel, if you go the other way you have to machine it out.

dude if you're looking to convert to an NA but donthave even $1K to put towards the project.....

my advice would be sell the car and buy an excel :p (jk)

But seriously, have a long hard think... if you can't even afford a grand... maybe you've got the wrong car.

why would he go for an na gearbox??????????? his converting from tt to na. the 5 speed will bolt us easily and you can use a na flywheel with no machining at all.

are you saying if he used an na box and a tt flywheel he will need machining? if so yes then thats true but why the hell would he do that for?
