hi everyone, My Zed steering problem still not fix it when I changed power steering pump today...... actually i bought a power steering pump from wrecker today and install it by myself, but the steering problem still not fix  My Zed sometime have a heavy steering problem but sometime it back to normal steering. the change between light and heavy steer is damn suddenly and cannot predict. when it during heavy steering, it's not like totally without power support but its still damn heavy. did anyone know what happen on my Zed? is that my power steering solenoid valve dead? or whole steering rack gone? i checked the speedo, it dosent have problem. ABS work fine. Changed the power steering pump. oil level is ok. thank you everyone
You may have checked already...but make sure the belt ...> to the power steering pump is tensioned correct...did you put a new one on or use the old one?
Re: You may have checked already...but make sure the belt ...> the belt is fine of cos~ im using the new one~
Don't know the cause but don't think it's steering rack. When I drive my N/A from cold, power steering is unpredicatable for the first few mins, maybe 10 corners, but only when cold. This has been constant since I have owned the car - 3 years. I have replaced the steering rack (2 years ago) and it made absolutely not one bit of difference! So, in my case, the cause lies elsewhere. btw, it's annoying as it can go light-heavy-light while turing one corner, but, as it clears itself pretty quickly it's really just a nuisance rather than dangerous. cheers, Peter
i find out my friend's skyline r32 GTS N/A have the same problem, it has a same steering system with us, but his one is always heavy!!!
Bringing an old thread up. I have the same problem with my steering. When cold the variable power assist plays up but after 10 or 15 minutes it's fine. Has anybody solved this riddle? Is it a wiring problem with the Solenoid system to the steering rack? Or a problem with the control system for it. My speedo is fine and everything else seems ok. Cheers, Dave.
Could also be the "Speed sensor circuit" connector (grey plug adjacent to the TPS). Try giving that a clean and see what happens.
Well I put my multimeter on the output side of the steering module to measure the variable voltage. Went for a drive and of course for the first time in months the steering didn't play up. The voltage started at about 5.5 volts when stationary and went down to about 2.5 volts at 100kph. Exactly what it should be doing. I suppose I should be thankfull that I may have fixed it but it always happens when trying to diagnose problems..They mysteriously go away when the multimeters are out. I did disconnect and reconnect all the relevent connectors so perhaps I had a bad connection. Time will tell I guess. Red32 - Thanks for the info. We all know how bad the connectors can be after 17 years on these cars. Will give cleaning that connector a try. Thanks, Dave.
Mine had the same problem going from normal to heavier steering then back to normal and back to heavy again. It was a universal joint in mine and that fixed it
AT LAST!! I have had my zed for 14 months now and the steering has always been intermittent....The speedo was ok....so over this period of time checked fan belt, oil reservoir, steering rack connection...all were ok....virtually left the pump and the power steering control unit under the ecu.Tried the cheapest and went for the pscu($50)....fitted it Saturday and cant take the smile off my face.....power steering works all the time now....not sure if all the same part number....mine is a jspec na auto....got the part off a auspec na manual....p//no is 28500 43p10
Thanks Ricky, That's exactly what I wanted to here. Where did you get the PSCU? Private sale or wrecker? Cheers, Dave.
