Back on topic for a moment. There are many of us

auto drivers who leave OD off around town. I hate the constant downshifting so leave it off below about 70 or 80km/hr. There is also the matter of the torque converter locking in and out (which does happen in 3rd gear too) which is also a bit annoying. I think the reduced load on the motor and the gearbox is a good thing.

dude how can u worry about changing down in gears all the time..
THATS WHY YOU BOUGHT AN AUTO

No, I didn't buy an auto because I wanted an auto.

I bought an auto because it was in great condition and because ... wait for it ... because my better half said she will want to be able to drive it too occasionally. Guess how many times she has driven it in my 27 months of ownership? Once. And that was once too often in my view.

I'm sorry all my fellow auto drivers, but I'm getting closer to a manual conversion evey day or I'll sell my baby for the right price and get a manual.

Sorry for the venting. I feel better now.

TC locking is good. Means you use less petrol. Plus it's quieter, I don't like driving around with the revs at 2.5k-3k while I'm going 70. Then again, mine doesn't seem to downshift until it really has to. Else I don't notice...

My auto trans guy said that leaving the O/D switch ON causes the gearbox to "hunt" between 3rd and 4th at low speeds, creating a heat build up which is not good. 4th (and the torque converter lock-up which is also activated by that switch) is meant to be used as a "highway-speed cruising" gear.

I like posting this in these situations. 20 less hP but stock auto is still > manual :p

I definitely prefer leaving the overdrive off if I'm travelling on sub 80km/h roads -- it just feels and sounds better that way. I only activate the overdrive when I know I'm going to be travelling above 80km/h consistently. I suggest those with auto boxes experiment for themselves and decide what's best for the way they drive.

serious? i find that hard to believe

you cant say that an auto NA putting out 120kw is actually putting out 150kw if it was a manual... otherwise a conversion would be one of the best mods you could do

You probably gain about 5 to 10rwkw with a manual transmission over an auto, everything else being equal.

It's the acceleration that's the killer, a 3rd gear pull in a manual vs a Drive pull in an auto will completely stomp the auto if the cars are otherwise the same.

That's a bad comparison, of course the auto will be quicker to 100mph because the lazy ass driver doesnt' have to do anything. He just puts his foot down and holds on! That speed figure would be accounting for shifts in the manual etc A manual trans will still accelerate faster gear for gear during a rolling start.

Exactly! You dont turn on OD unless you're at highway speeds, whoever says otherwise is flat out wrong. That's similar to driving around town in 4th gear in a manual if you leave OD on which is obviously stupid. You just need to listen to the engine if you drive properly, it will be obvious when it wants OD.

I'm not sure where 3rd in an auto gets you speedwise, but I'd say it wouldn't be far away from 3rd in an auto (no O/D). I don't know that the manual would blitz there.

Meh, i drive around with O/D on, but then, I've had the valve body upgraded so I have got good fluid flow so probably not likely to have heat problem etc.

The automatic is a 4 speed, ask yourself why are you in 4th at 60km? lol

The manual will stomp the auto everytime in a rolling start run gear for gear, trust me. If you dont believe me find someone with a manual and go for it and come back after you've lost and concurr what I said! :p

***NOTE***Ok first i just want to say i am not a mechanic or an transmissions expert and i dont know much about how transmissions work and my opinion/statements on this are purely of general thought and basic knowledge, not from experiences.***NOTE***

Q1, The automatic is a 4 speed, ask yourself why are you in 4th at 60km? lol
Answer, To conserve fuel of course, by making the engine work less and making less revs per min.

Q2,The manual will stomp the auto everytime in a rolling start run gear for gear, trust me. If you dont believe me find someone with a manual and go for it and come back after you've lost and concurr what I said! :p[/QUOTE]
Answer, i agree yes a manual would probably beat an auto in a rolling start but an auto would beat a maunal off the line in a stand still start but only off the line if the drivers reaction is the same.

I personally have my OD on all the time, wen i first got my car i was told by a cuzin that i should only use it for highway driving but then another cuzin said nah just leave it on. So being lazy i just leave it on all the time. Ive always been under the sumption that being in a higer gear conserves fuel by allowing the engine to work alot easier lower rpms. Wouldnt this decrease engine temps as well as i woudl think reving the crap out of your engine would increase engine temps, but if im wrong plz let me know. Also wouldnt auto trans be built for high temperatures and the only way you can really damage a transmussion is if its not look after or its abused. I dont race on a track so i dont really push my engine or auto trans much anyways. I only occasional drag some1 off the line till i get to the speed limit just to see how i go but i dont go like to push my engine.

Im guessing ill get some abuse back here but i have made a NOTE at the top to point out im just giving my opinion so please dont jump down my thought.

That's an extremely ghetto way to save fuel to say the least...

wouldn't driving in OD at 60 put too much load on the engine? that can cause pinging, right? i don't use 5th in my manual until around 80km+ depending on the road. I use 4th when driving on a flat/downhill road below @60 and for inclines i usually drop down a gear.
