    Hey all

Ive been driving the Z'd for a while now since the rebuild and have only recently stumbled across a problem.

When the car has been sitting for a period of time (over night, 8 hour shift at work, etc) and when cold, it screeches like a banshee when i start the car.

At first i thought it was a loose belt. So i checked them all and they are all relatively tight.

The only way i can stop it from screeching is to wait it out (embarresing and a pain in the arse) or slip it into gear and creep forward with the clutch almost fully out.

Any ideas on what it could be?

Have you tried to tighten your belts? Mine felt tight but still screamed on start up (which eventually went away). Tightening them up just a bit more did the trick. Just don't over tight!

first thing if do, is get a bar of soap and rub it on the inside of the belts(id say its your fan belt). if that doesnt work check all your belts, i hand a slit in one of my belts and couldent see it cause it was tight.

If the belts aren't too tight or too loose and it's just grime causing them to squeek then the stuff you want is called dry lube. You can buy it from just about anywhere, it's a stick of wax type stuff especially for it and you rub it on the pulleys. Or you can do the ghetto way with a bar of soap on the entire belt if you're really bored and feel like wasting an hour.

I'd make sure the belts aren't too tight either though, it shouldn't be too hard to pinpoint which belt it is exactly.

It's what it's actually made for and it's like $2 a stick. If that's enough to break your bank then it's time to sell your car and buy a pink moped with a floral basket on the front, or should I say your second one! :p

Yup, all elec, power steering and aircon is fine. Its wierd that the only way i can get it to stop without waiting is to put it in gear and ride the clutch a little...(im assuming this puts pressure on the belts or something and makes it stop).

I dont want to over tighten the belts and wreck bearings or anything thats all...they are tight already so i really dont want to do them up any more.

I'll try the soap trick... :p Does it have to be a bar of soap or can i use liquid soap for the ease of application? heheh

It will be a loose belt Andy...

I'll put money on it. Did you check the alternator belt (lower one)???

It can be an old bar of soap or a candle. The whole point is to get a waxy coating on the inside of the belts to act as a kind of lubrication.:zlove:

My guess alternator belt had mine squeeling a few weeks back. The belt seemed tight but what happened was the bolt holding the alternator in place came undone and was slowly working it's way loose.

Some smart cookie used the wrong bolt to put the alternator back on - must have been a dodgy mech in the past. :bash:

Would the screeching have anything to do with losing power steering fluid?

I had my HICAS warning light come on today a few times, once on start up - cold - and the others when cornering at higher speeds than normal driving. I have checked the fluid and it seems a little down.

Perhaps i have a power steering fluid leak? And the screeching was the pump running whilst dry? I dunno...

My Techno guys warned me about this with the Z32.

A belt feels tight, but is not tight enough to not slip, so after full belt replacement it is usually an "aftercare" visit to have one or two tightened - just the nature of the beast we adore.

The girls are moody, but much more than worth the effort.

Purgatory is life with a Hyundai in the garage.

    Best all.
