I have after much Looking and complaining about the $ involved in a good exhaust i have decided that I am going to make my own (plus I've been looking for a reason to try my new TIG out) So my Question is who knows anything about the science behind X-pipes. I want one of these because I want a quite car and I want the exhaust flow well .

    Things I'm after

Size of joining hole is it better longer or wide etc

    Best angles for pipes etc

    Any help would be great

    Cheers

    Shame, shame

You buy a thoroughbred and treat it like a hack. The exhaust system is probably the most important performance part on the car, and can make or break every other performance $ you spend.

Pay an expert and treat your racehorse with the TLC it deserves.

This is all theory, I haven't get any research to back it up but it all makes sense from what I've read on exhausts:

Well, with the join angle, the smaller angle the better as the air won't have to change direction as much.

Hole size, you want to gases to balance out but a bigger hole than needed won't cause harm. Again, it comes down to how much room you have at the area you need to join them. So, low angle + big hole = sexy time!!! Check some of the pics of existing ones to get an idea.

There isn't as much to this part of the exhaust as say the dumps, it just needs to be as smooth a path as possible.

Finished up buying one of the UAS mufflers with the x-pipe built in, been on the car ever since.
    works well.

thanks for that but since I have the bends and the pipe I've talked myself in to making it myself if I can't get it to work I'll go and buy something then

    That's a somewhat uneducated comment...

Exhaust isn't overly critical, specially on a TT. I'm going to make my own extractors, and not to save on costs but becuase there is nothing out there that meets my needs...

Good work Scrubber on getting out there and trying something for yourself.

I agree with vbevan in the respect of small angle, large hole. SHould work fine.

Theres a lot of snake oil sales men out there

when it comes to performance exhausts, so I did my own.

The mufflers, resonators and tips are from Lukey.

The crossover / X-pipe I made myself. I did a lot of searching on the internet and the design I used was surposed to give an extra 5kw's. Its about 200mm in length.

The pipe size is 2 1/4" as my Zed is a NA. From everthing if found out, this was about the right size

I dyno tested before and after, got an improvement to bottom end and mid range, but on improvement to the top end. It sounded nice too

Now that is a good looking X Pipe..

if you look at the V8 Supercars, in particular Lowndes when he rolled the HRT car.. the pipe is very simular..

Gonzo makes them like that, and Jet boats are simular..

Thats where the idea came from

The guy who did the web site that I found was at the race meeting and took a piccy of it. He went home a did a trial of 2 different lengths, found the 200mm one gave the extra 5kws.

    this is excellent
    http://www.surefloexhaust.com.au/xpipe.htm

is there anyone that makes these 200mm x-pipes, and are they 2.5 or 3".......getting 3" all through wouldnt be bad for a 270+rwkw zed, and too loud for the boys in blue?

    This is

a similar design X pipe, not quite 200mm, but close at 180mm.
