    Guys,

On the weekend a noticed a weird sound coming from my rear left wheel. Now theres always been a noise but it was really mild and nothing to even be bothered or curious by.

What had happened was, I was turning right onto Homebush Bay Dr. off Parramatta Rd, it was my right of way, some imbread retard didnt give me way and almost collected me, but I noticed him coming so I slowed down, never the less he hit the ankers and locked them up and luckly avoided me. Admittedly this guy almost visited Jesus becuase I was gona murder him for his complancency, but my MRS and best mate slapped me around..
After my fit of rage with 4 people in the car on a newly sticky tarmac road I dropped the clutch at 4.5rpm on the 265s and off i went. It was after this I heard the hysing sound.
Really hard to explain, can only hear it when your next to parked cars or going slowish next to a gutter. There is no vibration and no tyre ware. It doesnt go away but as you get faster the engine and wind drowns out the sound.

I have heard of people doing burnouts and diffs shuttering a couple of mills out, could this be it? Or is that impossible???

    Ideas would be great. Thanks.

Could be the brake pads need replacing? My fronts make a hissing sound when there getting thin.

Funny that because that is exactly what my mate said aswell. But he told me when he braked it got louder as where mine doesnt... So that was the time we ruled the pads out...

Actually, mine is the opposite. When I brake hard the squealing stops. Just have a look at your pads through the wheel, should be easy enough to tell if they look flat.

I think when I brake hard the "screamer" pushes against the rotor stopping the noise but when I don't brake it lightly touches making that damn annoying noise. You can hear it best as an echo when you drive next to walls.

If it sounds like a light screeching/metal hissing sound you can be pretty sure it's the brakes.

    Agree

Check the wear marker on the pads. Mine was also a PITA when off brakes, and quiet while braking

Could be steam hissing out of your ears. Easily fixed by taking an Anger Management course.
I assume this other driver ran through a red light?(otherwise, as the turning vehicle, YOU have to give way to oncoming traffic AT ALL TIMES). Sounds like you were very lucky to not get wrecked.
My guess would be the Handbrake Brake Shoes are rubbing.

He said that the hissing sound came after he dropped the clutch on the sticky road. So I wouldn't think it was brake related.
    Maybe a wheel bearing??

I disagree. This is what Jase said: "Now theres always been a noise but it was really mild and nothing to even be bothered or curious by". It has only become more noticeable since the incident, NOT caused by it.
Wheel bearings don't "hiss" when badly worn, they groan.

Just replace the brakes pads, for $50 or so, it's a pretty cheap job, even if you don't require them for another few k's better safe than sorry.
if that eliminates the problem, good.
if not, it's $50 invested in your safety, not wasted.

    good luck.

you may even have a stone or something stuck between the disc and caliper from when you did your sik burnout (yo)

Yeh I think I may go with the replacment if the pads. I just hope it is that and something that isnt worse.

RE: Chilli, He ran the red but I saw him coming to fast so I just had a guy feeling.

I could say that the sound became definatly more louder and noticeable after that, but if it was a direct cause of that I do not know....

    wheel bearing

My front wheel is doing the same thing , I machined the discs , new pads , new tyres . Still makes the hiss without the discs on the car ( on stands ) when you turn the stub axle , I will be changing the wheel bearing next week as that is the only thing left to do . It may be the same on your car .

There seems to be an enormous increase in the number of dikwits "running the red" in Sydney these days. Almost at every set of traffic lights, someone will slide through on the red.:eek:

My money is still on the Handbrake Shoes.:zlove::zlove:

What you explaind here was the same kinda thing that i had on my first car, you would only hear it next to a gutter or when u drove past parked cars. I took it to my mechanic after an hour or so of diagnosis and road testing it came down to.....the little wieght they put on your wheel when they balance them. It was loose and wasnt seated properly. Changed that and never heard the sound again. Such a simple thing, i suggest you have a look at yours.......

$50 for good high quality brake pads on all 4 corners? I doubt it!

But it's not a hard job, just get under there and look...

$50 for back pads (since noise is coming from the back) that will do fine on the road. Remember the majority of your braking comes from the front brakes.
