got a new exhaust from a exhaust shop, just your average joe kinda dude..

was smoking like crazy when i 1st got it and he assured me its normal as all the chemicals and shit need to be burned away, he rekoned it would take 2 weeks..

now i've done about 700km on it so far and my passenger side has stopped smoking.. but my drivers side still smokes when the car gets driven when engine is cold, or when i dont drive it for a few hrs like if i goto the shops, then i go and drive it pull up at the lights few seconds later get a bit of smoke..

so after a drive i come home and it starts smoking again.. so i grabbed video camera.. rev'd the car a bit then let it idle and heres what smoke came out.. it's done it alot worse than this before aswell..

do you guys think maybe he didnt do the gasket properly and the gasket is burning? or is it a turbo..

the smoke doesnt smell oily, smells more like chemicals being burnt..

I doubt the gasket would burn, unless something red hot was touching it or a naked flame. It looks more like a problem with the engine. If the mufflers are a cheap style like the ones autobarn etc sell and generic brands, you will probably find the internals of them are shit and will break apart after a few months. If they used some sort of glue or something inside the muffler, that could be melting, I doubt the fibreglass would be melting (if that is what is used in your ones). My mufflers are packed with glass and I never got smoke like that. It could be engine related, oily smoke smells similar to chemical/plastic smoke at times.

Usually the cats smell funny when they are new, not the mufflers or pipes.. I think he is talking shit but again it could be that brand of muffler...?

If you didn't change the mufflers and just changed the pipe, then they may be coated inside but again that isn't really likely.. I've never seen or heard of pipes having to be 'run in' lol maybe he used plastic or cardboard as a gasket or something

yeah i reckon its either the guts of the muflers breaking down or oil leak in the turbo :(

oil can also collect in the intercooler piping and coolers themselves if you have a leaky turbo. if it turns out to be that, make sure all your piping and coolers are cleared of oil, otherwise the smoke may continue to occur.

they are hks super draggers, the muffler that its comming out of was my original hks dragger thats been on my z for god knows how many years.. it was fine and never made any wierd huffing noises till now..

    now it sounds stuffed..

    there are no cats..

there was no smoke prior to this, and has happened directly as a result of having my exhaust changed...

i will also add they kept it over night, and it also needs a wheel alignment now as it pulls to the left..

Oil smoke tends to hang around alot, the smoke in that video seem to dissapear pretty quick. How extensive is the exhaust. ie new dumps, test pipes, O2's etc. They may have used some type of sealant on O2's or with the gaskets, And thats whats burning off. But 700km's is plenty of time to run it through I'd imagine.

    Hey

I know your probably hoping for the best and all. But thats exactly what my frist Z did when i had a leak from the bottom of the turbo.

For me, it slowly got worse, only ever happened when i was idleing.

    Good luck.

2.5" dumps and front pipes no cats, thats how it was before i took it in, and my cat back was a hks single 3.5" setup, i ditched it and got a twin 2.5" mandrel bent setup with my old hks dragger and a hks dragger that came off a supra..

my original muffler sounds stuffed now and makes a brapping noise and its the muffler that the smoke comes out..

possibly a ****** muffler? if so ill be asking why its ****** because it was a1 before i got it re fitted...

Are you 100% sure that it's your original and not the second hand one off the supra? They could have switched sides when fitting them. If it's the second hand one it could be damaged.

Take the muffler off or take the exhaust off near the cats, anywhere it's joined is fine. If smoke is still coming out with no muffler then I would put it down to your turbo.

That is the quickest and easiest way to rule out if it's your muffler, it's only 2 bolts to undo.

i dont get any smoke after i start driving it around, no matter how many times i come to a stop, or how long i let it idle it wont smoke after being driven..
its only on the 1st start

If it is a seal, it may only leak at certain times depending on the temp of the parts around the seal (expansion etc)

Drop the muffler, tell us what happens.

The answer may be as simple as the piping is just free of carbon deposits and you get get a lot more moisture settling as it cools down.

I had 4" cat back single pipe apexi exhaust when I first got the zed. Replaced it with twin 2.5" mild steel piping and I get probably 200% more condensation when she's been sitting for a while.

goin back to the exhaust shop tomorow as theres leaks in the welds aswell..

ill get him to keep the cat back over night and see how it goes.. start it up tomroow morning see if i got the smoke..

if i do, do you guys think i'll have a case against him at all?
my car did NOT smoke what so EVER prior to having my cat back installed..

my wheel alignment is out and he reset my trip meters which has me suspicious that he may have taken it for a caning while the engine was cold..

No case at all, don't waste your breath. The moment you took the car away from them is what screws it up. Don't even think about that crap seriously you will just be wasting your time.

I hope it wasn't ringwood performance exhausts or whatever they are called lol
