Rear caliper upgrade

I am thinking about upgrading my rear calipers and discs, I just got the larger DBA ones from Caz today for the front and was wondering if anyone had ever put the front setup on the rear, i.e. large rotors and the 4 piston front calipers. I am looking at upgrading my fronts to 6 piston and it looks like the old 4 pistons will fit on the rear with the original front disc.

    Anyone tried this before?
    Did it work?
    Any issues?

    Cheers

    Re : Rear caliper upgrade

Fitting the front caliper/rotor to the rear of a zed would be a BIG job because there is no provision for the handbrake. The rear rotor has little drum brakes on the inside that are used as the parking brake

I think you will find that setup on the rear providing way too much power and the rears will lock up or always activating the abs, plus you will loose your handbrake with different discs on the rear. Your front brakes are providing around 80% of total braking force and just like a motorcycle braking brings the centre of mass forward effectively reducing the weight in the rear of the car, so putting more powerful brakes on the rear will not improve performance as the tyres physically wont have the same traction available.

The best thing to do would be to buy the wilwood 4 piston rear setup. It is cheap but you will be relying on hydraulics for the hand brake.

and it's illegal isn't it? I thought you need a cable hand brake?

Dont know about that will look into it though.

I think 6 piston GT3 rotors like the slot car front an 4 piston rears would be great. Car is a toy so is never parked anywhere etc only in garage and drive it to relieve stress and just generally cruise around. The more I get into the more track orientated it becomes.

Maybe I should buy another one for the track an 89 or something :D :D

Having no handbrake/emergency brake is totally illegal in Australia. Having a handbrake/emergency brake that uses the same actuating system as the foot brake, is also illegal. The emergency brake/handbrake Must use an entirely seperate actuating method to the footbrake i.e. hydraulic footbrake, mechanical/cable operated handbrake.

Does it have to be a different type of actuating method or can it simply be a completely discrete system? Surely if you have two hydraullic systems that are totally independant of each other that is adequate? Haha that is bloody ludicrous and almost comical if it actually does have to use a different type of system altogether.

Chili is right, personally, I wouldn't trust hydraulics to hold my car on a hill.. hydraulic systems fail without notice. The cops do however, always remember to check if your hand brake is adjusted (7 clicks is it?) when you get pulled over here in VIC only if they feel like they haven't met their quota for the week.

Keep away from it to be on the safe side, unless your car is a track only car.

An entirely seperate hydraulic handbrake would have to have a seperate set of calipers as well. Just how much room (and weight) do you want to play with? Most of you guys are obsessed with reducing the weight of your cars, and unsprung weight is the worst kind of weight to have if your trying to improve handling.:confused::confused::eek:

    damn handbrakes

I never used to use the handbrake at all in my other/last car (damn still have it in the driveway FOR SALE 1991 XR8) cause it was an auto...

Learnt quickly with my Zed when in a carpark and lock it up with the turbo timer running and it starts to follow me down the hill.... had to get someone to hold it while I unlocked and got in..... very embarrassing .... suffice to say I have only done it ONCE.... I always think of what would have happened if it rolled 2 minutes later.....

I also heard something about that is part of why older holdens aren't good drifting... is because the hand/PARK brake is designed to HOLD the car when stopped ... and not to hit hard when moving.....

This is what happens when your handbrake AND Auto fails!

I was about to fly out to Fiji and and inside to grab my passport when i herd this massive bang like the front door had just been slammed with all its might. My missus then started screaming for me. I go outside and my friggin car has slipped out of park (was a tricked auto and did that somtimes). It only just missed pinning her to the wall too!

    Wall is actually bowed..

    Ouch!

    That is bad mate...

Sorry about your car and your wall, but most importantly your missus is alright. Though by the sound of it, your ears may have taken a bit of a thrashing!

    Thats a classic mate.

Few years ago my niece was playing in my patrol and some how released the handbrake and the car rolled down the drive and smashed into my mother in laws S class mercedes. Wasnt too happy about it I might add, insurance covered it but still cost over 8k for basically a rear bumper and some taillights.

Sorry to hear it though hope your missus is okay and your ears have recovered.

yer all is good now, had a GREAT holiday!

Got the Patrol AFTER that happened myself! Now if that rolled down the hill..

Id would prolly be doing some serious renovations!

And yer she survived that time

She actually PUT herself between the car and the house to try and stop it when it was 3/4 of the way down the hill!

Nearly had to go OS without her :p :D

    red32 You talkin' to me?

Apparently a not uncommom fault with Ford autos, especially those with a column shift (do they still make them?), where the selector will slip out of park and into reverse... a REAL problem if you've left the engine running. I've seen on TV (and I'm sure there will be videos on the 'net) showing older Fords travelling backwards, usually in circles 'cause the s/wheel was not centered.
Shame about the damage, but I'm glad no-one was hurt.
